Main problem with Islamism today is highly juristic understanding of Islam reduced to just rules and regulations. The state is the arbiter and enforcer of the law. This is a highly westernised understanding of Islam and politics that emerged in the 20th century, even the idea of an "Islamic State" which conflates the shari'a it's interpretation and application with the state.
This is actually in contradiction to the caliphate (the only legitimate form of govt) where the development of the shariah took place outside the purview of the state and sometimes even in opposition to it.
Islamists want Islamic state to enforce shariah but if everyone is living shariah-compliant lives then the premise of an Islamic State is nullified and makes no sense.
This is why Islamism is doomed to fail and will instead become social movements, and strong sufi elements in society. These are far more powerful in attaining an Islamic society than Islamic States which alienate people (Iran). Best case and example was Egypt back in 1950s most women were unveiled but thanks to strong Muslim Brotherhood influence in society it became more prevalent.
