How can you tell from the x-ray image? Is it just the bright white line where the growth plate is? Don't they have to do it on the femur's growth plate?

When I've had unrelated x-rays, the doctor guys look at the black-and-white picture for one second and diagnose me with this and that. And I'm like what are you looking at.
