Introduction
From an aesthetic point of view, lips help to define the general harmony of a face. When its proportions go well with the nose, chin, and midface, the result tends to feel cohesive and visually comfortable. Even slight variations in lip curvature or volume can change the perceived mood or character of a face. For this reason, understanding lips is not about ideals but rather how they participate in the greater structure of the face to support a person's natural expressions and individuality.
How & Why
1. Proportion and Balance
Lips naturally vary a lot between individuals. What tends to look harmonious is when the size and shape of the lips fit well with the rest of the face (eyes, nose, jaw, midface length, etc.). Balanced lips help create a smooth transition between facial features, making expressions look natural.
2. Symmetry (but not perfection)
Slight asymmetries are normal and common. Very large or sudden asymmetry may draw attention, but mild asymmetry is part of what makes a face unique.
3. Expression and Emotion
Lips are a major part of how we show emotion. Fuller or well hydrated lips can make expressions look clearer, softer, or more dynamic but again, expression quality depends on muscle movement, not size.
4. Context With Other Features
Lips don’t exist in isolation; they interact visually with: nose projection, chin support, philtrum length and teeth + smile width. Harmony is about how all these work together, not changing individual parts.
How to improve them
Drinking enough water + using a basic lip balm prevents dryness and makes lips look healthier. Picking at dry skin Constant licking (this dries them more). Cosmetics such as a lip balm or Vaseline should keep them shiny/glossy. You could also choose a tinted lip balm to emphasize the colour of your lips to better match your facial contrast.
Examples
Chin to Philtrum ratio: 2.0-2.25
Measured by dividing the height of the middle part of the lips to the bottom of the chin by the height of the bottom of the nose to the middle part of the lips.
Lower to Upper lip ratio: 1.62
Measured by dividing the height of the lower lip to the upper lip.
Mouth to Nose ratio: 1.5-1.62
Measured by dividing the width of the mouth by the width of the nose.
