When a person’s face is hidden, others tend to assume that they are attractive.
A study of 500 people looked at 60 faces and ranked them on attractiveness. The study included faces both with and without masks and participants were asked to rank them on a scale. Researchers found that when people were masked, their attractiveness increased by 42%. This phenomenon is exactly what happened in the case of Dream.
Dream is a Minecraft content creator who gained a massive following WITHOUT showing his face. It was only until later on in his career after being successful that he chose to reveal his face to the world. He had hyped up this ‘face reveal’ event for some time and had fans excited to finally see what he looked like.
Would he have been laughed at if he looked like this?
Probably not.
Dream isn’t deformed. He doesn’t have any facial scars or injuries. At worst, he is an average / slightly below average looking man. Despite this, he was laughed at and mocked by many because of the false, hyped up mental image of what he was thought to have looked like. He went trending on Twitter with millions of people talking about how ‘Dream is ugly’
Okay. The internet can be cruel. Surely after this died down everything went back to normal right?” Sadly not. The face reveal was over a year ago, yet dream is still continuously hated for his appearance.
Sure, Dream has been involved in a lot of controversy and may have made some stupid decisions. But put yourself in his shoes.
How would you feel if you finally built up the confidence to show your fans what you looked like? And were met with nonstop mockery and hate for nothing but your physical appearance. Mocked for nothing but the body that you were born with.
You didn’t choose your genetics. Neither did Dream.
This is an old leaked picture of him.
He clearly used to be overweight, obese even. Dream put in the work and lost tons of weight to maximize his appearance before showing his face.
But did it even matter?
He is not ‘ugly’ because of any decision he has made. He was born this way. Some things just can’t be changed. The internet does a great job of taking away our humanity and empathy. Would you treat him so horribly if you met him in person? I doubt it. It can be hard to fight your genetic instincts, but try to remember that Looks don’t define a person. Dream didn’t ask to be born the way he looks. Why hate him for it?
Conclusion:
I know a lot of people are going to agree and a lot are going to disagree this is just one of many examples how looks = life.
The better you look the easier life you will have, the better people will treat you. I wish this wasn't true and I know you wish the same.
But the Lord said unto Samuel "Look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him; for the Lord seeth not as man seeth. For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
