Best way to help it? Do I need to strengthen back muscles?

this is extremely good advice, it's exactly my warmup for deadlifts
I used to have back pain everyday until I started doing that, I atributed my recovery to deads though
I only feel pain in the lower back due to Sciatica, but there are exercises that calm that too, so it's good
i just do cow/cat and cobra pose

Thanks. It really helped me after having pain from deadlifting. The first step was the big game changer for me personally. A lot if people overlook strengthening the muscles in a weak position, because even someone who can deadlift 400 lbs can have back pain when bending over to tie their shoes. It’s about functional strength and mobility rather than just gym strength.

I do this thing

as far as I can until the pain starts to fade, then go for a run and it's gone.

It can be hernation at this point. Go to a actual therapist is the best option
