I having been scrolling through the many areas of this forum, clicked on many links, watched plenty of tiktok videos, procrastinated on youtube and the idea that sex/sex appeal sells is becoming more and more true.
Im pretty sure everyone on this forum knows this but I want to talk about it a lot more in depth and I want to talk about how it has MANY negatives.
Before I start I want to give credit to @Matheus for inspiring me to make this with his recent thread “why tinder isnt reality” https://looksmax.org/threads/why-tinder-isnt-reality.267035/
this played a major role to help put things into perspective.
In this thread he talks about “perceived signals of value” and how LOOKS, and NTness are some of the major signals of value for a man on tinder and how women that go after these traits use them as an guess to his value since they can only invest a certain amount of time into each man’s profile. He than goes on to argue that this is not how things work in reality and there are many more variables that come into play in regards to a women finding a man attractive IRL.
I cant do much to dispute this because he is correct tinder isn’t real life. But near the end of his post he opens up the door for the possibility that tinder could carry on to real life if the women that join tinder, develop a mindset where they are prone to rely to much on perceived signals without taking anything else into account. And this is where my theory comes into play.
I would like to add on to what he said by emphasizing that men can also rely too much on perceived signals of value and it can be just as bad as women doing it and that tinder is closer to reality due to the hypergamous nature of people in society that try to get with those that have the highest amount of perceived value.
I will explain: tiktok, youtube, instagram, porn, triple A films, magazines, what do they all have in common.
People involved use sex appeal to catch the eye of the watcher.
It’s one of If not THE EASIEST WAY TO GET ATTENTION it takes very little effort on the performer side and it catches a lot of eyes.
And who do they use?
A conventionally attractive white woman/man
They are the zenith of physical beauty in the west (after all they do have the highest amount of perceived value).
but they don’t always have to be white indeed this is starting to change more and more by the days. But one thing that’s hasn’t changed is that they must be SHOWING SKIN or WEARING CLOTHES THAT EMPHASIZED THEIR FIGURE in order to get the attention of men and women.
We are BOMBARDED with the stereotypical image of an attractive man/women every day on multiple media platforms and after years it becomes so cemented in culture to the point where if you see someone that doesnt look like that being sexualized your brain might throw an error.
Its a real killer to the self esteem for many people and it creates a MASSIVE PYGMALION EFFECT that is cemented through culture.
im not trying to sound like some leftist snow flake, but if you want to talk about the issues with perceived value this is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed.
The fact that a degenerate girl showing her ass on tiktok and instagram has more attention that a woman studying to be a lawyer goes to show you where we are heading in society. And the same goes for men, the handsome athletes getting way more attention that the nerdy stem majors.
This confusion of value is also the same reason why young girls are starting to sexualize themselves earlier and earlier as the time goes on. And why they start to show more skin early on , they are trying to find ways to get the attention of the opposite sex, they are trying to find ways to feel good about themselves they want to feel as wanted as the hot girls on those magazine covers.
And this is the real kicker it DOESNT MATTER HOW GOOD OF A PARENT SOMEONE IS, THEIR CHILDREN WILL STILL BE AT THE WILL OF THE BEAUTY STANDARDS OF THEIR TIME. THE GIRLS/BOYS WANT THE ATTENTION OF THE OPPOSITION/SAME SEX and what easier way to get it than sexualize yourself.
Hyper sexualization screws over people in the long run by giving them this false idea that looks= value
It tells you since a guy is wearing a t shirt that shows his pecs and biceps = high value in every way
It tells you since a girl has thick thighs and a nice ass = high value in every way.
this is a major issue that will effect relationships on a large scale.
We are literally creating an environment where we say the only thing that matters is looks much like “tinder”
now many people are here on this forum are young enough and hopefully intelligent enough to understand this but for anyone under the age of 14 this might go over their head entirely. Just think about how our culture will effect their brain subconsciously.
Tl; dr : hyper sexualizing in culture is giving people the wrong ideas on what matters in people and it is causing harm on a mass scale.
Especially for people that may not have those traits to benefit from it.
