1) Metabolically, the brain under anesthesia is further away from a state in which the dead brain is than in a normal sober waking state, and the brain in a normal sober waking state is further away from the dead brain than the brain under LSD, psilocybin or DMT. General anesthesia increases overall brain activity, while psychedelics decrease overall brain activity.
How physicalists are usually trying to cope:
"When propofol boosts the inhibitory drive, this drive inhibits other inhibitory neurons, and the result is an overall increase in brain activity"
They start to play semantics game. I can just as well say "When propofol leaves the brain, this boosts the excitatory drive, this drive excites other excitatory neurons, and the result is an overall decrease in brain activity". But of course it doesn't make sense if you're honest about what excitation and inhibition in the brain means. In terms of broad and global effects on brain activity, increased inhibition will always lead to a decrease in overall brain activity. This relationship is fundamental to how neural circuits operate. When we talk about the broad and global context, increasing inhibitory processes always leads to decreased overall brain activity.
There's something known as global excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) balance in the brain. If you increase inhibitory processes, there is a corresponding decrease in excitatory processes somewhere in the brain.

"Neurons communicate through electrical currents called action potentials, which are either excitatory or inhibitory. Excitatory currents are those that prompt one neuron to share information with the next through an action potential, while inhibitory currents reduce the probability that such a transfer will take place"
"Neurons and circuits coordinate their excitatory and inhibitory inputs to establish and maintain a constant excitation/inhibition (E/I) ratio"
"The measured effect of all excitatory and inhibitory currents received by one cell is known as global excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) balance"

"Human EEG studies with serotonergic psychedelics consistently report a broadband spectral power decrease (delta to gamma) most pronounced within the alpha band (8–12 Hz) and a decrease in functional connectivity and integrity of networks [21,22,23,24,25,26]. On the other hand, increases in higher frequencies (gamma oscillations, 30 Hz and above) have been also described [27,28,29]; however, the effects are hard to interpret due to typical contamination related to increased tension of the facial muscles. MEG, in contrast to EEG, is devoid of this contamination [30], and on the contrary shows a decrease in oscillations within the gamma range [31]."
2) Blindness can be caused solely by personality. Completely healthy eyes and the visual part of the brain, and yet you can be blind with eyes open, and the cause of it can be solely personality.

"We present the case of a patient having dissociative identity disorder (DID) who-after 15 years of misdiagnosed cortical blindness--step-by-step regained sight during psychotherapeutic treatment. At first only a few personality states regained vision whereas others remained blind. This could be confirmed by electrophysiological measurement (it can not be faked), in which visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were absent in the blind personality states but were normal and stable in the seeing states.

Anesthetic causes unconsciousness by creating brain chaos
Researchers have figured out how a commonly used general anesthetic drug induces unconsciousness by causing brain activity to become increasingly unstable. The findings could lead to better anesthetic control in the operating room and treatments for conditions like depression and schizophrenia.
