This is my Modern Skinmaxxing Guide since retinoids, azelaic acid and estriol is becoming way more popular

THREAD MUSIC:

THE BASICS

The foundation of every skincare routine should start with a cleanser (Not CeraVe) Cleansers remove dirt, oil, sweat, sunscreen etc from your skin. They prep clean skin so whatever comes next can actually absorb instead of sitting on top of grime.

Moisturiser:
A moisturiser’s main job is to hydrate the skin and lock that hydration in, using two types of ingredients working together:

Humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid) draw water into the skin

Emollients/occlusives (ceramides, oils, petrolatum) seal that water in and smooth the skin barrier

SPF:

SPF’s job is to protect skin from UV radiation the main driver of premature aging, sunspots, and skin cancer risk. It’s the last step in a morning routine, applied over moisturizer.

Water:

Make sure to be consuming 3-6L of water per day to hydrate and support your skin.

Diet:

Cut out the ultra-processed things from your diet and stick to a whole food diet.

RETINOIDS

What are retinoids and how do they work?

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that speed up skin cell turnover and boost collagen production. They’re one of the most well-studied anti-aging and acne ingredients in skincare. They work by accelerating how quickly skin sheds old cells and generates new ones, which helps fade discoloration, smooth texture, and unclog pores. They also
stimulate collagen production in the deeper skin layers, which softens fine lines and improves firmness over time.

WHICH RETINOIDS SHOULD I USE?

For the best results I would highly recommend using Tretinoin or Tazarotene, Although I would recommend starting with tretinoin at 0.025% strength and work your way up to 0.5 and then 0.1 eventually switching to tazarotene of necessary as tazarotene is much stronger than tretinoin and will cause irritation if you use it right away. Use a retinoid during your evening routine a few nights a week eventually working your way up to nightly and remember to be patient as results may take 3-6 months to show.

OTHER IMPORTANT PRODUCTS

Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid (found in grains like wheat, barley, rye) used to treat acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation. It’s gentler than many actives. Azelaic acid works by calming inflammation and redness, targeting the acne-causing bacteria C. acnes, gently exfoliating to unclog pores and smooth texture, and inhibiting tyrosinase (an enzyme involved in melanin production) to fade pigmentation like post-acne marks and melasma. I recommend using a 15-20% strength gel incorporating it daily into your morning routine after cleansing and before moisturising.

Estriol BP Cream

Estriol is a weak form of estrogen that can influence skin cells by activating estrogen receptors. Estrogen signalling is involved in things like collagen production, hydration, and skin thickness. Pairing this at night alongside a retinoid like tretinoin or tazarotene is great
as
Retinoids increase skin turnover and collagen signalling, but they can also cause irritation, and barrier disruption. Estriol is sometimes paired alongside them because estrogen signalling may support skin hydration, elasticity, and barrier function.
