The most popular Gen Z content right now is not analysis, it's a comfort for people who have already decided they're failures
I hear BS like:
“You can’t buy a house"
“You can’t get a real job"
“Kids are impossible"
“Everything is too expensive"
“There’s no point"
All the time
These statements contain pieces of truth, the problem is what happens after the statement is made, for a huge portion of the audience, the sentence itself becomes the activity, the recognition of the problem is the dopamine, while the video ends, the next one loads, and the cycle continues, nothing is required of the viewer except agreement, this isn't insight, it's a low-agency loop
The algorithm is a reflection
wrote about this in my previous thread aswell here:
A person’s feed is an accurate read of their internal state, when the dominant content is endless confirmation that the game is rigged and individual effort is pointless, it is rarely because the algorithm randomly selected it, it is because that is the content that feels most true to the person consuming it, the feed does not create the resignation; it reflects and then amplifies it
High-agency people get bored of pure doom relatively quickly, low-agency people return to it daily because it removes the burden of action, if everything is already over, then today’s lack of progress requires no explanation
YOU are not the average
Statistics describe distributions, they do not describe any specific individual with certainty, this is obvious in every other domain, the average person does not become a high-level athlete, a successful founder, or someone with high smv, the people who do those things are, by definition, the exceptions
Yet in the current discourse the statistical average is treated as a personal prophecy, “most men will struggle” is quietly translated into “I will struggle, therefore effort is cope" that translation is the actual cope, it protects the ego from the possibility that the variable under personal control (agency, consistency, selection of inputs) is the decisive one
Tiger Woods and Tom Brady did not spend their formative years consuming content about how statistically unlikely it was for them to dominate, the people around them who brought that energy were filtered out, the same filtering happens in every high-performance environment, the complaining mindset is not neutral, it's actively corrosive to the people who still have a chance of winning
Weakness is the original sin
Abstain from weakness, you fagz lul
In any competitive domain the primary moral category that matters is capacity, moral language about fairness, oppression, and systemic failure is secondary, those things can be real and still irrelevant to the individual who decides he is going to be in the small percentage that succeeds anyway
Most of the current Gen Z depression content inverts this, and treats the recognition of difficulty as a form of intelligence and treats the refusal to be demoralized by it as naivety or “toxic positivity", in reality the opposite ranking is closer to the truth, the ability to look at a difficult distribution and still act as if you intend to be an outlier is the scarcer, higher-value trait
The literal meaning of a life is whatever the person repeatedly chooses to do instead of ending it, for a large and growing group of young men, that activity has become the consumption of content that confirms their powerlessness, complaining is not a temporary phase on the way to action, it literally is the action, it is the thing that structures the day and provides a sense of identity
That is a very low-quality meaning, it's also extremely sticky, because it requires almost no risk, you never have to test yourself against reality, you only have to keep agreeing with the feed
The environment is harder than it was for previous generations in several measurable ways, that is not in dispute, what is in dispute is whether the correct response is to make the difficulty the center of one’s identity and media diet
The people who will actually move the needle on their own outcomes are the ones who treat the statistical headwinds as background noise rather than as a personal script / prophecy, everyone else will keep refreshing the same videos that tell them, in slightly different words, that it was never going to work anyways
This theory thread is an extension of the 'failed normie' type that I diagnosed here:
Failed normies, never doom, always work towards improving your situation
That's why you're here, isn't it?
