MSE is usually done in like a few weeks I think
But what if you were to spread the expansion over a year?
Would there be no separation of the teeth?
Would the nose still increase in width?
Would retainers after still be necessary?
(Idk who to tag @SlayerJonas @willbetruechang2299 @eon )

As someone who actually went through it, it’s usually a complete looksmin.

There will still be a gap obviously, but it may be less dramatic if the expansion is done more slowly.
Your nose will get significantly larger. That’s by far the most noticeable change.
Changing the speed of expansion has no effect on this.

During expansion, your cheekbones will look broader and more prominent. A lot of this is swelling, which fades once the device is removed, and even more so over the years. I confirmed this with CT scans. Some relapse is almost guaranteed.

Your upper lip will initially elongate, but this effect only partially lasts.

You’ll most likely end up more asymmetric. In my case, it left me with a canted maxilla that requires surgery to fix.

Breathing does improve a lot at first, I felt a big difference. But even that effect slowly fades with time.

I did it to treat mild sleep apnea with surgery in mind. You should only consider it for health-related reasons like that.
Otherwise, you will be disappointed.

I have a narrow palate
And one side of my face is slightly wider than the other side
Can't the ortho just give one side of the palate more expansion than the other

Also dosent nose width occur once you reach 4mm expansion or more

Same here. Youd have to work with a good ortho/surgeon to place the device correctly to expand the asymmetrical side less. Also I’m wondering about insurance if you have sleep apnea (I’ve had sleep apnea ever since braces and I bet the Jews won’t let me get mse covered)

The UK literally invented botching their citizens with braces on purpose ahahaha. Even John and Mike Mew were sued by the orthodontic association in England for trying to use expansion.

Fully agreed. I have an mse too.

A few questions - when u say that some expansion resorped, how much did it shrink?

Did it go back all the way to how narrow your maxilla was before the mse, it is there still some expansion?

Does your zygos width (when seen from the front) reduce visibly after removing mse?

I expanded 7,8 mm. The original plan was 10-12 mm, but complications came up, my orbital bone actually fractured from the constant pressure JFL. So, we had to stop early.

During the first year, my cheekbones looked very prominent, and I got a lot of comments on it. Now, they’re almost back to normal visually.
There wasn’t a huge increase in facial (bone) width to begin with, but based on CT scans, I’d estimate about 30-40% relapse.
My tongue‘s still way too large for correct tongue posture. Or rather, the maxilla still isn’t sufficiently broad. Though, I am a class 3 as well, so that impacts this as well.

We probably didn’t leave the MSE in long enough.
My ortho initially insisted relapse wouldn’t happen, but clearly it did. To be fair, I also wasn’t completely consistent with the retainer, though those mostly stabilise the teeth, not the skeletal changes anyways.

isnt mse worn for a few week then for 6 months - 1 year, you have to wear a retainer to prevent relapse?

I did it 3-4 years ago. Maybe there have been some advancements since then that make it possible, but with a regular MSE it’s actually more likely that your larger side will expand further. That’s exactly what happened to me. It makes sense, since bone density can differ from side to side, and asymmetry like that isn’t uncommon.

but can an ortho give one side more expansion, my left side needs more than my right, and my left side of the palate is narrower than the right :feelsthink:

Usually, after the last turn, you’re advised to keep the expander in for about six months. Personally, I don’t think that’s enough. Clinics want quick turnover, they don’t want patients wearing the device for years, since there’s only so many they can treat at once.

Supposedly, and according to my ortho you don’t need it after a while, but I’m skeptical about that.

You have to do your own research, but from what I know, this isn’t possible with a regular MSE due to the factors I already mentioned

i have a theory that if the expansion is very small over a long period of time, the gums, ligaments whatever idk what to call it, has enough time to fix itself like keep together :feelsthink:
