This is for anyone who was still curious about this thread from last year. I made the helmet according to the instructions on the thread.
TLDR I’ve been doing it for like 5 months but only 2 months consistently. The main result I’ve had is improved facial symmetry; my face appears wider but I haven’t seen any changes in face length or forward projection so far. Not exactly life changing, but imo worth it for how cheap and easy it is.
I started with this method back March when I got a 2 way Schwarz expander with reverse pull hooks off Braces Shop. I didn’t get much expansion from that (turned it once a week) and I don’t think I got any teeth tipping because neither my dentist or my orthodontist said anything. Anyway I would use the helmet for 30 minutes a day when I felt like it, but I would drop it for weeks at a time when it got too inconvenient. I really didn’t notice any changes, but I wanted to include this a) to illustrate how important consistency is for this method and b) because I feel like it would be dishonest not to.
I decided to get serious with this method when I got Damon braces installed in mid June. As mentioned in the original thread, it’s crucial that you use Damon braces (AKA self ligating braces) for this because the wire can actually move through the brackets, allowing for arch expansion. Honestly, even if you’re not doing this, anyone who cares at all about how their face looks should go for Damon braces over Invisalign or god forbid traditional braces. I had to look hard for an orthodontist that offers them, but it was actually the same price as Invisalign and only like 15% more expensive than normal braces would have been.
Anyway, I’ve only missed about seven days total since then because I was out of town (There’s really no way to transport this thing without looking insane, unless you play hockey lol). As I stated earlier, the main improvement I’ve seen so far has been an improvement in facial symmetry from the front, especially in the eye area. At the start of this year my right eye was literally level with my left eyebrow, and my right cheekbone was nonexistent where I had some lateral projection on the left. Since then my eyes and cheekbones have leveled out (though there is definitely still some asymmetry there) and my face looks wider as a result. I don’t think I’ve had any actual arch expansion, but it’s hard to say with my braces. I also haven’t seen any of the forward growth that was promised in the original post, and my lower face/jawline still sucks; I’ll probably just get fillers soon and then I’ll get implants when I can afford it.
If you’re wondering whether my orthodontist would notice my wire being affected by this method, I was worried about that, too. I doubt he’d have encountered someone doing this before, so I was prepared to say something like I’d been eating hard or sticky food if he said anything. Thankfully, he didn’t say anything when I saw him last week. If anyone is interested in this method I can keep updating just let me know
