JFL it used to happen to me too just assess them from away and walk very close by them (need to live in a crowded city) to see their real height and you will adjust to tell one's height from afar.

It's because you don't look at them at eye level. I'm 6'1 and used to feel that way but then I started comparing eye level than overall height and I realized I wasn't the midget my mind made me out to be.
