First off, this is not absolutely true, and I don't get how you never tought of that. Men were battling each other for the right to rape the women and have kids from them, women were completely passive and powerless in this istance, and that's good because infraspecies competition happens in almost every primate.
So women were passive, and they used to belong to the winner, without any saying in the matter. Now, the fact that more women then men would reproduce more it's because basically when a man wins he is gonna kill all the other males and keep women alive, even if just children.
Let's say you invade a village, kill all the men, and the women have 6 children each, half males and half girls. What you gonna do? You are gonna kill all the boys and keep the women alive so you can reproduce with them when they grow up, or to let some of your soldiers reproduce, so you have a whole harem of women, plus potentially their daugthers, while you got rid of the children. Technically the other men reproduced but you made it vain by killing their offsprings.
