Let's go a little further than this.
Looking good helps you do better professionally, socially and romantically. But where it makes the biggest difference, a huge difference in fact, is the romantic part.
Essentially, no matter what people might claim or say, the biggest reason they care to look good is to attract more mates, and especially more beautiful mates. That goes for both men and women.

When you hear people, that invest a lot of time, effort and money in their appearance, say "I don't try to look good for other people, it's for myself" or "I don't try to look good for men/women, it's for myself", you know it's some of the greatest cope ever.

I've always observed myself in third person and if i felt like i looked ugly i didn't even wanna do basic activities because it would be so unaesthetic

I think it depends, once you reach a point where it doesn't matter (say you have a girl and a good secure job) then looksmaxxing for the point of of just looking better is possible. But if you don't have this stuff then its pretty much impossible.
