Inbreeding gets an undeserved bad rap, mainly because society fails to recognize its benefits. The supposed detrimental effects of inbreeding are only relevant if the resulting offspring lack genetic resilience to environmental factors. Phenotypes affected by inbreeding are a consequence of specific combinations of recessive alleles carried by the parents.
Inbreeding is prevalent among various animal species and often leads to improved fitness in offspring.
The societal taboo surrounding incest stems from male intrasexual competition, primarily driven by gynocentric tendencies that allow females some sexual mobility. However, this competition-driven narrative has nothing to do with any inherent genetic problems caused by incest.
If there were no punishments for incest among the common folk, powerful men would face challenges in assembling their coveted harems of virgins. Most females would naturally lose their virginities to close male family members such as fathers or brothers, who have the easiest and immediate access. With incestuous punishments in place, common folk fathers are compelled to give their daughters to other men, or else the daughters would make their own choices. This arrangement ultimately results in a disproportionate number of women being paired with the most powerful or genetically optimal males within society.
It's important to note that laws against incest are rarely applied to the elites. Throughout history, many kings and princes engaged in reproduction with their female family members, alongside maintaining harems of other men's daughters.
