If you insufflate substances, it's important to take some basic precautions and actually look after your nose afterwards. This becomes especially important if you're doing it regularly.
Keeping the environment and equipment clean is an obvious one, but standards can slip pretty easily when you're under the influence, so it's worth making a conscious effort to keep things hygienic.
The substance itself matters too. Assuming you've already taken the necessary steps to check what you're using, it's worth considering the physical form of the material. For example, is the powder actually fine enough?
It should go without saying, but snorting crushed pills is generally a bad idea. Tablets can contain fillers, binders, coatings, and other inactive ingredients that aren't intended to be put into the nasal passages.
Nasal Irrigation
Nasal irrigation is another thing worth considering, particularly if insufflation is something you do regularly.
There are various commercial nasal-irrigation products and devices available, and saline solutions can also be prepared relatively simply. The general idea is to flush out remaining material and reduce the amount of residue sitting against the nasal mucosa.
The actual process is fairly straightforward. A typical nasal-lavage method involves leaning over a sink, tilting your head to one side, placing the nozzle into the upper nostril, breathing through your mouth, and allowing the saline to flow through the nasal passage and out of the other nostril.
You can then repeat the process on the opposite side. Once you've used roughly half of the solution, you can gently blow your nose and continue. The purpose is essentially to flush out remaining residue and help minimise irritation to the nasal mucosa.
Don't overdo it, though. How frequently you irrigate can vary, but excessive irrigation can itself become irritating.
If you regularly insufflate, just use common sense and actually pay attention to the condition of your nose. Persistent irritation, bleeding, sores, crusting, or pain aren't things to simply ignore.
Your nose isn't indestructible. Look after it.
