Tariq had spent three days picking out the perfect rug for his apartment in Lahore, making sure the shades of crimson matched the sofa. Everything in his life was carefully arranged, from his ironed linen shirts to the exact timing of his morning chai.
Then came Gamer.
Nobody knew where Gamer had come from, or what his actual name was. Tariq’s girlfriend, Ayla, simply brought him over one Tuesday evening and introduced him as Gamer. Gamer didn't speak much; he just stood near the doorway, wearing a worn hoodie, carrying a half-empty bottle of iced tea.
At first, Tariq thought Gamer was just an eccentric friend from Ayla’s university design class. But within two weeks, Tariq started noticing subtle shifts. Whenever Tariq offered to take Ayla out to dinner at her favorite handi restaurant, she would pause, look at her phone, and say Gamer had already arranged something else. When Tariq brought her red roses, Gamer was already sitting on her veranda, holding a single, flawless blue orchid.
One Saturday afternoon, Tariq decided to settle things once and for all. He drove over to Ayla’s family home, determined to talk to her about their future. When he walked into the courtyard, he saw Ayla sitting on the low swing under the mango tree. Next to her was Gamer.
"Tariq," Ayla said softly, looking down at her hands. "I think we need to stop seeing each other."
Tariq froze. "What? Ayla, why? Is it because of him?" He pointed toward Gamer. "Who even is he?"
"He's Gamer," Ayla replied simply, as if that explained everything.
Gamer gave Tariq a polite, brief nod, took a sip of his iced tea, and offered Tariq a quiet "Sorry, man."
Before Tariq could say another word, Ayla stood up, took Gamer by the hand, and walked out through the front gates. Tariq stood alone in the quiet courtyard, surrounded by the scent of jasmine, watching Gamer walk away with his girlfriend.
