Palate expanders literally make a cut in the palate and put the device, i had a friend in high school who had MSE and told me that the surgeon cut his palate first and then put the device.

No tbh, if you don't actually have problems with function then it's useless, plus you can widen your palate trough bimax, only if you actually need it, remember surgeries are there to fix failos and not create halos most of the times.
