The reason they believe it is because both political parties in the US have for promoted this lie for decades, the Dems benefit from immigration because most immigrants vote Dem, the traditional big business Reps benefit from immigration because it lowers labor costs. It is only the past 10 years that non traditional right of center people like Trump and Tucker Carlson have argued against this narrative and gotten a significant following. 20 Years ago it was probably 85% that believed that narrative, but 20 years ago there were not nearly as many legal and illegal immigrants as today.
