Phytoestrogens’ similarity to estrogen means they can interact with estrogen receptors in cells. These receptors mediate estrogen’s functions within the body (3Trusted Source).

However, the effects of phytoestrogens are much weaker than those of estrogen. Also, not all phytoestrogens work the same.

They preferentially bind to E receptors in the stomach, liver, etc instead of the breast. In short, you get the good of estrogen without the bad.
