Unfortunately the genre didn't improve or be explored... it died. Pieces like the maple leaf rag are actually good, musically.

Rachmaninoff is my second favorite, after Liszt the legend ofc. His works are great, but very hard ngl.
You should play according to your level...
G.Henle Verlag ---> https://www.henle.de/en/ ......... is a website for classical musicians because they set out/develop and edit sheet music and they grade pieces based on difficulty. They have music pieces ranked on 9 levels of difficulty.
This helps a lot. Right now, I am leaning Franz Liszt's Transcendental Etude no. 9 'Ricordanza'. I'm almost finished with the cadenza's (the hard parts). The piece I am learning is an 8/9... but i am able to learn it slowly because I have already improved on the technique to play the hard trills, the arpeggios and fast scales. I can play all level 6 pieces. 7 is somewhere where i am developing atm.
I would suggest that you start with something like the easy Chopin Nocturnes or List's consolations. Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, most of Liszt, Beethoven and Schumann are generally grade 7+.
