There are approximately 8.3B now, it’s worth noting that’s likely an underestimate. The industrial revolution started in Britain around 1760 and later spread globally around 1840.

There are literally billions upon billions of people who are essentially drones and would not have survived if nature took its course. This will accelerate as we become more “advanced”. Those who would not reproduce are reproducing and more than replacing them and their partner.

Do you guys ever see someone and just find yourself awestruck they survived this long? I doubt my experience is unique.

BAP mentioned noble animals hesitancy to reproduce during captivity in BOM. I don’t think this directly transfers to the greater humans of today, however it probably holds true for some of them. It’s not unfounded to predict this will become worse and worse; this will lead to the quality of each member of the human race lowering considerably with time.

Most of us will concede the world was better prior to the industrial revolution for the average individual no? With the current world population we literally need all of the bullshit to survive as a collective, the 8B must all consume slop to maintain; this is on a basic needs level and the fact most are emotionally reliant on their copes and shelter from what is real. I don’t think it’s possible for humanity to thrive anywhere near such masses.

In a way I'm kinda jealous of people in the past. They weren't constantly surrounded by various kinds of machinery noise such as from cars, trucks, planes, trains, etc. They weren't surrounded by 8 billion fucking people, most of whom are just noise. There was much more nature before too; 8-lane highways, data centers, industrial and energy plots of various kinds, etc, didn't take up thousands of square feet each. Cities didn't take up the area that could be a small country. The largest cities only had some hundreds of thousands of people instead of tens of millions. England had less than 3 million people up to the 1500s, now it's at 56 million. Europe was at only 40 million people only 1000 years ago, even in the 1700s it was less than 200 million; now it is at 750 million, and that's a low level for a continent in the modern world. Sure life back then was shit and full of unpredictable disease, but god, how quiet everything must have seemed. The modern world just feels like a constant buzz or hum. The modern world never sleeps. The individual person isn't special anymore because there's just too many of us.

In the past too recurring epidemics of smallpox, plague or consumption would keep the population levels stable, but now we've conquered these diseases too. There's no natural ways to keep a low population anymore. It all depends on unpredictable human fertility levels.

On Wednesday I sat out in my garden in the sun for a couple hours to read. The entire time I heard the persistent and agitating hum of the cars+other machinery. Bear in mind my city is relatively small compared to others and I am in a suburban area not the city centre. This hum muffled the sound of birds chirping and trees rustling in the wind.

Even in travelling from my city into countryside where things are supposed to be unaffected by modernity, you are greeted by the sight of cell towers and littler.
