Assuming you work at somewhere prestigious currently, how did you differentiate yourself from other candidates for your position?

Currently, I am:
  • One of the top students for my specific university degree, potentially #1 for all undergrads. I go to one of the top universities in Australia (though Australian universities seem to not carry much esteem).
  • Involved and have senior positions in university co-curriculars/institutions directly related to banking.

I think stuff like LinkedIn connections are a numbers game to acquire some sort of prestige through having 500+ connections (none of which you'd really ever take advantage of), I think that type of thing is superficial and it is implicit that if you must connect with a wide range of people to try and acquire some prestige, you are a midwit.

With that being said, is it actually important to treat LinkedIn like the numbers game that others do? Did you ever get the opportunity to take advantage of a menial connection you previously thought to be meaningless?

Did you ever have some sort of individual endeavour that proved valuable in differentiating you as a candidate? If so (being considerate of your anonymity), what was it?

If you are not in Banking/Finance but might have something you did that is universally applicable, please share it also.

Thanks for any replies :)

Was at school and a man complimented my tie. We then had a conversation revolving business and politics which lead to him asking me about my future goals.

Once hearing about them, he must’ve saw his younger self in me and offered to take me under his wing. Turns out he’s a very intelligentsuccessful man regarding business, finance, and marketing with connections to other globally successful businessmen and financiers. He bought and recommended me a few books to study, introduced me to some people, and provided some stock/crypto advice. This is where I’m at now.

Other connections were funnily through TikTok. I happened to find people who shared the same endeavors as me but have had time to their advantage (they’re 23-25 while I just turned 18).

So yeah, a bunch of luck and a nice blue tie. Only thing I can say is to be assertive about your endeavors and try to be as charismatic/resonant as possible. If you can find personal emails or catch them in person, that’ll be great. In my opinion LinkedIn isn’t enough anymore, at least where I am in the US.

Very sloppy writing but hopefully it’s understandable

shitposting on twitter has a pretty high roi, i was able to land a contract through it recently. im in tech tho, i dont even have a linkedin, idk if finance has hackathons or something similar, id go there and meet people. true connections matter, not random ass connections on linkedin, its mostly a meme platform, at least in tech

Hi there, I previously had a Financial Services internship at a global investment bank. Whilst I do not work there currently, I think I may have some words of wisdom.

1a) LinkedIn is useful, but not the be all and end all. The reason why it is useful is because Network is Net worth. I'm sure you have heard this phrase before, and however overused it may be, it is true. The people you know will ultimately be the most beneficial thing when it comes to getting placements.

1b) The best way to expand your network is through extra curricular activity. Simple things like where you go to the gym, where you go to eat, what sort of events you go to, all dictate the type of people you will interact with. If you have anything like a country club near you, your best bet is to join that and strike up conversations with some of the older gents you will see. Chances are they are in higher up positions in a useful industry.

1c) The way you come across to these people is incredibly important. Every time you interact with somebody, it is essentially a sales pitch where you are the product that you are trying to sell. You must be confident, smell good, and of course, look good.

If I think of anything else, I'll comment again or you can feel free to DM me. Hope this helps :)

I really appreciate your insight. I hadn’t thought of places like a country club but I’ll absolutely look into it. Thank you again.

I work remotely part time for a quantitive finance startup while studying cs at one of the best unis in germany as an internstional student at the same time. It is always connections. To be honest there are much more capeable and smarter kids in my class but they never applied for these kinds of stuff. I feel like a fraud but I am getting a good cv and money out of it so idrc. Don’t know if it will change once I do my masters/graduate but I think I have/will have one of the best cvs in germany for my field

I’m a senior banking manager for Wells Fargo, I got my position by networking with social media optimization. Have you tried getting some interns to write your connections a rebate?
