you can tear raw meat off a carcass just fine with a modern jaw trust meA Mutated allele.
Almost every human in africa is heterozygous for that allele and the non mutated one. Why?
Because if you're heterozygous for that allele you don't contract malaria.
At the same time the rate of people who are homozygous for the mutated allele or the normal one are greatly reduced because natural selection favors the heteozygosity for that gene in places were malaria is endemic, so you don't contract it or have the full effect of the sickle cell disease.
Over time that allele might mutate even more into a different allele which doesn't cause the slight sickle cell disease symptoms you get in heterozygousity, but will still keep you protected from malaria.
That's most of the process of how natural selection and gene mutations works.
Same goes for the genes which were responsible to help us digest raw food; an example of that is the gene that induced a more muscly jaw which helped you better tear meat from animal carcasses, over time we got rid of it because it impaired our verbal communication and was useless with cooked meat.
Name of the gene i'm referring to is MYH16
