Welcome! Only a few days on the platform, and a lot of people asking about UEE. So here is a thread that explains the mainstream methods based on a few factors. First thread on the platform, Took me a lot of time and effort to research this, so here you go.
What even is UEE (Upper Eyelid Exposure)?
UEE is short for Upper Eyelid Exposure, it pretty much means how much your eyelid is visible when your eyes are opened.
LOW UEE = Little skin is visible
Example: Sean O'Pry
HIGH UEE = Alot of skin is visible
Example: Cilian Murphy
How can you reduce your UEE?
There are actually two main methods to reduce UEE. I also see a lot of methods on Tiktok, which are pure marketing and don't work at all, I will cover those too.
I will be going over the following:
Methods that work:
1. Fillers
2. Frontalis
Methods that don't work:
3. Krokodil
4. Volufiline
5. Body Fat
6. Eyelid Pulling
SO HERE ARE METHODS THAT ACTUALLY WORK (WHICH ARE NOT ALOT):
1. Fillers
This is probably the most efficient way to deal with UEE, we can use fillers; Belotero, Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma, Perlane, Radiesse, Sculptra or even your own fat to completly eliminate UEE. So if you would like to use this method, which honestly is the best method, you can read through guides like this: https://looksmax.org/threads/fix-upper-eyelid-exposure-ha-upper-eye-lid-filler-simple.2067621/
Which are honestly very well written and you can follow that to DIY.
If you do HA fillers they probably will last around 6-12 months, Fat grafting on the other hand will last years. So overall this method is the best, because it carries zero risks if you know what you are doing and it does not cost a fortune.
2. Frontalis
What is the Frontalis?
The Frontalis is a muscle which largely covers your forehead, it is classified as a part of the occipitofrontalis muscle. It creates facial expressions through wrinkling your forehead, raising and lowering your eyebrows.
So why should it have an impact on UEE?
Well, because UEE is often associated with how low or high your eyebrows are set. As is a muscle, therefore it can be weaker or stronger.
Strong:
Weak:
If your muscle is weak, your brows are low-set, if your muscle is strong, your brows are high-set. Why is that? Because when it contracts, the fibers pull the foreheads and eyebrow skin superiorly, increasing the vertical position. A stronger Frontalis creates a stronger upward force and this actually stays like that. If the muscle is completely relaxed you allow your eyebrows to rest in the lowest position possible due to downward forces like gravity and brow depressor muscles.
Concluding we can say that if you try relaxing your Frontalis all the time, your upper eyelid exposure will be less, because your brows are set lower. Some people chronically lift their muscle especially while asleep, so if you try to relax your muscle all the time, especially before going to bed, your muscle will become weaker. This is probably the only muscle that you want to be weak: More Relaxation = Weaker Muscle
Botox:
There are also methods including Botox, injected above your eyebrows. Botox or Botulinum toxin reduces your muscle activity, same concept here: Frontalis weakened = Brows go down. There are also a couple of guides out there on how to use Botox, so if you want to do that method you can look into those.
Conclusion
If you notice that your brows are in a high position, relax your muscles or inject Botox. It will cause roughly a 2-3 mm lateral descension of the eyebrows if done for a few weeks and reduce UEE. If you just have no fat in your upper eyelid and this method doesn't work at all -- FILLER. After some time your brain will adapt and chronically relax your Frontalis, even while asleep.
DON'T WORK:
3. Krokodil
Some fuckers on here say this actually does something and it is an upgraded version of Volufiline. I can tell you as much that it doesn't work and you should not try it
. So every kiddie that wants to have less UEE don't try Krokodil.
Krokodil is a name for a drug called desomorphine which is a semi-synthetic opioid. It works as a μ-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist in the brain and spinal cord. It increases Gi/o protein signaling, which then reduces things like adenylyl cyclase activity and presynpatic Ca2+ influx etc. It pretty much trims down neuronal signaling, producing analgesia, sedation, euphoria and also respiratory depression. It comes with heavy side effects and it is often completely contaminated which causes your tissue to be eradicated. If it wasn't as hard to get all kiddies on here would be playing around with it, luckily there are pretty much no good sources for it.
reward = zero
risk = catastrophic
4. Volufiline (HUGE MARKETING BS)
How is it meant to work?
Volufiline works through an ingredient called sarsasapogenin, which is a plant derived steroid that allegedly stimulates lipid storage in adipocytes.
Many people think it works because theoretically it could increase the amount of fat stored in the upper eyelid and therefore make it appear fuller and hence reduce UEE.
How it would be used?
It would have to be applied to the eyelids 2x daily and is very easy to source, as it is a non-prescription "serum".
Evidence?
Volufiline has been tried out on boobs, in which it increased a 2.2 % in volume after 56 days of use. It had a very small evidence base and is not really reliable nor applicable to eyelids. Every grey that tells you this is transferable is low IQ.
Conclusion and why it does not work efficiently
Volufiline is not made to reach the retro-orbicularis oculi fat, as it doesn't penetrate deep enough. It is unlikely for the volufiline to travel beyond the epidermis and superficial dermis. To reach the ROOF it would need to pass:
The Epidermis
The Dermis
The Subcutaneous tissue
The Muscle Layer
RISKS
Irritation, Allergic Reactions, Skin Sensitivity
OVERALL
Volufiline is too weak to actually do something and is a waste of money as it costs roughly 25 dollars for one tiny bottle. It is marketed by Tiktokers like Sky who get paid for saying that it works, even though they themselves have fillers.
5. Body Fat
How is it meant to work?
It is meant to work by elevating overall body fat and therefore also changing the amount of fat in your upper eyelid.
Weight gain → more facial/periorbital fat
Weight loss → less facial/periorbital fat
How it would be achieved?
It would be achieved by generally gaining more body fat, which can take some time.
Why is it not a good method?
There is no way to target the body fat in a way so it goes it the eyelids, so consequently weight gain may decrease UEE in some people, and in others it doesn't do anything and they just have a bigger butt.
Scientifically speaking you cannot target the upper eyelid and there is no way of assuring it because of adipose-tissue-distribution, why is controlled by specific genetic and molecular programs. (Differences in Adrenergic receptors, insulin sensitivity, lipolytic enzymes etc.) Orbital fat is anatomically completely constrained within the orbit, so it doesn't really depend on how many calories you eat.
Conclusion
Gaining bf just makes u fat, not worth the hustle and rather causes a fat face.
6. Eyelid Pulling
Claim:
Some jesters out there especially on TikTok say that training the muscle (levator palpebrae superioris (LPS)) reduces UEE.
Why does this not work?
It is actually quite simple: your position of the eyelid is not determined by a single muscle which you can hypertrophy or reposition. The upper eyelid is positioned by the LPS and the Müller's muscle, which elevate the tarsal plate. The muscle often mentioned in the videos is the orbicularis oculi, which closes the eyelid. Trying to train these muscles is pretty much pointless and while never outwork your gentically predispositioned orbital septum, levator aponeurosis etc. Skeletal muscle hypertrophy also doesn't cause a difference in resting eyelid position because it is much more determined by other things then the strenth or size of the orbicularis oculi.
Why can this cause wrinkles?
The repeated contraction of the orbicularis oculi produces unnecessary skin folding and shear, over time the lines can become persistent as the extracellular matrix loses the ability to return to the original configuration. So it will increase the risk of wrinkles at 30.
Well that pretty much was it, I had to trim it down a lot for everyone to understand. If you want to know my sources I can send you a the links via pm.
