Also what you said may cause water retention but it would also cause edema in the ankles and other areas of the body. Alcohol topically drying on the scalp(with some no doubt leaking on to the face) would locally irritate and dry out the skin cause water retention.

Your face bloats after you sweat allot and the reason for that is salt on the skin draws water by osmosis. Have dry upper skin layer due to article I believe would do the same thing. I remember when I did a minox experiment on my eyebrows when I was 18 and my face looked like crap.
