You know how certain features are a result of human adaptation to the environment? East Asians likely developed monolids as an adaptation to the cold, Middle Easterners have thicker, longer eyelashes due to genetic traits linked to their ancestral environment and so on.

you start sprinkling sand in your eyes and force your body to grow longer eyelashes

i would suppose it would be that people that did develop those features, thrived better in that environment so had more offspring due to dominating everyone else
example: person a and b live in a desert
a has long thick eyelashes and deep set eyes
b has shallow set potruding eyes with barely any lashes
a finds it easier to thrive and surviver and see animals in the desert due to less sand impacting eye
b gets blinded so he cant hunt as good or do shit
a has offspring easier than b
a's features gets passed down onto his children
b's bloodline ends
