Scalp partially visible on the sides of my head through the hair but not on the back or top

Is there any reason for this? It’s like my hair is thinner on the sides than the back even though the hairs were cut to the same length. Am I balding or something?

Why on the sides but not the back though? Also it's close to the sideburn area.
