Thinking about starting to learn another language. Whichever of the two I don't pick, I'll learn after I'm done with the other. In other words, I'll learn both either way. Japanese will take quite a bit longer and also demand more effort because of the vastly different grammar and the writing system (Just the kanji, the others aren't a problem).

i just got to the point in russian where i can read novels without a dictionary and watch TV series. im also learning japanese. that said, learn russian first. both have insane grammar - russian has seven cases for example where japanese has three alphabets, honorific rules, different counting systems, etc but russian grammar is easier

I guess so, but not by far. Russian has a few more speakers but Japanese could be more useful at times; Japanese people barely speak English, unlike Russians.

That's great. Yea, I definitely assume that Russian will be easier. But should I learn it first because of that? Let's say I start Russian one year after I started Japanese. By the point when I'm one year into Russian, I'll already be two years into the harder language, Japanese. If I start with Russian, from this point in time it will take longer until I've fully mastered both languages, but in return I'll be a lot better at Russian at a particular point in time from now.

depends on if you've learned other languages previously. if you have experience already and know you won't get discouraged, go for whichever one you feel most drawn to. or, even better, alternate focus on each language. do one week russian, two weeks japanese, one week russian, etc.

i speak french, german, italian, spanish, russian. improving portuguese, learning mandarin and japanese

As an anglophone, Russian will obviously be easier and will give you a head start if you decide to learn other Slavic languages like Polish. There's also more Russian speakers than Japanese speakers.

Do you know/have any familiarity with other languages besides english?

Which languages do you know so far?
German is my mother tongue (well, technically Swiss-German is a separate language but, to give you an idea, I was basically fluent in standard German by the time I entered primary school), my English is flawless, in my region of Switzerland you start to learn French in school in fifth grade, though I was terrible at it until I picked it up myself. I am now at a level where I understand what's going on in a TV-show if subtitles are activated and I can understand texts quite well without a dictionary. I also taught myself Spanish to a similar level but I'm still less experienced with that language. And lastly, I taught myself Portuguese to almost the level as Spanish because it's so easy to learn when you know French and Spanish.

If you’ve learned Latin or Greek, Russian grammar won’t be too difficult for you. But you need some time to acquire the pronunciation.

That said your interests should play a role too: If you like Russian culture and Russian girls then you’ll have more motivation in learning the language. Same with Japanese when you watch anime and dream of a lovely waifu.

Personally I prefer Russian not only because I love reading Russian history and literature, but Russian girls are also attractive in my eyes. On the contrary I have zero interest in anime or jap foids.

Had Latin in school for two years, forgot everything though lol. I'm kind of interested in both cultures and I think I could spark my interest a bit more if I had a reason to. I'm also not really a huge anime watcher tbh.
Learn mandarin.
It's on my (rather ambitious) list, but it's gotta wait for a bit

One advantage in learning Japanese I can think of is that you’ll get more opportunities in socialmaxxing: parties, expos, anime festivals etc, where you can meet lots of weeks (there are such events regularly in my area). Whether it’ll help you get sex is another question.

mirin, my spanish is decent but it’s really embarrassing that English is the only language I’m fluent in. Now would be the perfect time for me to either work on mastering spanish or learn a new language

btw I think you should learn Japanese, their culture seems more interesting

It indeed is the perfect the time for so much right now ngl. Now that you mention it, the Japanese do have quite an interesting culture. But I don't know if that's enough motivation for me to learn all the kanji (the chinese symbols).

I would say Russian just because it's way easier, but if you're interested in Japanese literature/Films/Anime or whatever then learn Japanese.

I knew Russian very well in my Childhood but never studied it and only learned it because kids in my neighbourhood mostly spoke Russian, till this day i can 99% understand and speak Russian but can't read or write in it lol.

A lot of words are the same in English and Spanish, as you've probably heard. About the same ones that you also have in French. The grammar might be a bit unaccustomed at first, but it's not really complicated, at least compared to other languages. Pronunciation isn't hard either but that's never really a problem once you're 2-3 months into the language, is it? Which one's your native tongue?

The way I look at it is if you want to learn a language, then atleast learn a popular one. Like Spanish and Chinese.

Why would you commit to an unpopular language, given the effort it takes to learn a new langage well?

Sure, Russian and Japanese are popular, but their populations are also rapidly dying. Then you also have the issue of Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc just being too hard. Probably Russian too. In the end you're left with Spanish.

Like I said, I'm gonna learn both languages either way, so difficulty doesn't play much of a role here.

You should learn to write and read Russian by the way. Can't be that much of a hassle if you're already able to speak it and you can only gain from it.

Like you already said, Russian and Japanese are not unpopular. As for their apparently rapidly dying population, I don't think that will be much of an issue within my lifetime. A language can never be too hard. Japanese might take a little longer but I'm very confident that it will be doable. And, like I said, I'm onto Spanish.

I missed this response. The problem with learning both languages is that I kind of already am learning 3 at the moment lol. My Spanish, my French and my Portuguese all definitely still need improvement. One additional one should be doable though, especially if I'm doing as little for my french as I am now, due to an unfortunate lack of motivation. Are you more of a "one week this language, one week the other" guy then? I've always thought of simply studying each language every day being the best strategy. My brain seems to be able to handle the constant alternation.

That's a good set of languages there btw, mirin.

i try to get to an intermediate stage in one language until i start another tbh. i could never do the alternate thing but i know many can. for example once i started reading novels and literature in russian is when i restarted my mandarin and japanese. however, as i advance they are becoming quite difficult to manage both at the same time so i'll have to pick one to focus on soon i think.

I don't really know what to do once I get to a rather advanced stage, like I am with my French, my Spanish and soon with my Portuguese. I'm just watching Netflix series because I don't know any better.

If anyone cares, I am tending toward Japanese although the fact that this would be a commitment that will last for more than just a while is making me a bit unsure. I will take some time out of my day tomorrow to look deeper into both languages and cultures and simply make my decision based on which one sparks my interest more.
