Should i tan or avoid sun?

I think a slight tan is way more appealing then pale skin but the issue i run into is my freckles. I feel like dark freckles are a sign of bad skin health and could ruin me if they got darker. So do I tan and darken my freckles or avoid sun use sunscreen and try and get rid/lighten my freckles?
