I'm not a theologian but that's a crude position. The Ashari position is much more true to sensibilities - it doesn't deny predeterminism but sees free will encapsulated in that predeterminsm. It doesn't surprise me that asharis like Ghazali had thoughts that would precede modern interpretations in quantum mechanics. Obviously the 'god fills in the gaps' explanation is there, but embrace the 'unknowable' if you don't want to take the leap of faith.

To be honest, in your example - and like @SecularIslamist points out; also, I am no scholar either - it's got to do with "free will." I mean, even if you're genetically predisposed to be gay (if that's really a thing) then that still means you're the one in power when it comes to doing whatever you want; however, if you wish to engage in degeneracy (sodomy, in this case) then you will be punished for this sin. Similarly, the Qur'an admits people are faulty and thus by design we are not going to be perfect; but we still choose, at the end of the day, whether or not we want to engage in something that does not please the will of Allah SWT. For instance, I'm a lonely virgin who's never been in a relationship; if I WANT to, I can lose my virginity anytime and have sex. But I choose not to do this, because it is morally wrong; it would not please Allah SWT, therefore I refrain from it. For this very reason, I have also turned down invitations to threesomes (by the same person, but he sure was persistent).

Its forbidden to reveal your sins to anyone other then Allah, except to a trusted imam for advice and to a judge for punishment if you think you deserve it (not obligatory, your choice, but its the ultimate deed. For example a women who cheated on her husband came to the prophet telling him what she did, the prophet knew what should happen to her for that, and he told her to go away, she returned a 2nd time the prophet still ignored her, and finally by the 3rd time the prophet stoned the women).

There is a hadith where he fought againts a tribe that refused to pay zakat or submit to islam, the soldiers surrendered, yet he didn't care and killed all the men anyways by beheading. When Muhammad learned of this he just got angry at Khalid, no punishment for a grave sin of murder which doesn't fall under the rullings of punishment
