It wasn't until the first Spiderverse movie where he's an actual character. Personally I don't mind the video game's approach either, with both of them existing in the same universe and both being Spider-Men, but the vidya's plot clearly hinges on "passing the torch" to him at some point

I’ve been reading Miles Morales since his introduction to the ultimate universe in 2011, and you are correct that when he was FIRST INTRODUCE he just felt shoehorned in as a way to replace Spider-Man since the ultimate Peter died, nobody liked him at all up until his 2014 comic run where he was transported to the 616 universe
