The study was made on old people with osteoporosis, so their bones were already degenerating...Also vitamin D on its own might not do much without other factors like vitamin K2, calcium, magnesium, etc.
K2 MK-4 in fact is probably more important than vitamin D in improving bone health, because it moves the calcium to the right places, while vitamin D can calcify everything indiscriminately including soft tissues, muscles, organs, etc.

Taking high doses of Vitamin D without sufficient magnesium, vitamin K, and physical activity can result in calcium being deposited into soft tissues rather than bones. This can contribute to lower bone mineral density (BMD). Also, the test group in the study had a mean age of 62.2 so they probably had lower physical activity.

you need k2 to actually deliver it into the bones also doses over 800 IU are hardly necessary interesting study though

I think it’s the magnesium too you need like 1g if you taking 5iu of d3
