I think masculine dimorphic traits accomplish this "self-detrimental ornament" effect as seen in deer and peacocks far more effectively.
Even if self-inflicted detrimental ornaments like tattoos accomplish only 10% of that effect, it might be worth doing depending on what your goals are.

What I am saying is or atleast might be true according to some study’s.
It has an background from the ancient ages where the tattoos did much more damage than in today’s world. So the person who got a tattoo needed to have a strong immune Systeme to survive it. And this is still wired in our brains.
Also the pain aspect plays a role as well
