Test Saturation and lifting frequency

Been on Test P 60mg ED for past 5 weeks. Haven't really noticed any crazy muscle gains but still solid progression. Going to get bloodwork soon, but is it normal for my saturation period to take this long? Thinking about tossing in 40mg of Var on days I lift to help boost my progress. (2x frequency split)
Also for general split, have gear users seen better results with a higher volume and average freq (like ul 2x with higher sets) or 3x frequency fb and lower volume.
