The best computer science students come from these countries

I think Poland should also be mentioned on that list. They are almost always among top 5 countries on codeforces, won cybersecurity competitions, and polish names figure in top IOI winners too. There was a research conducted by hackerrank and it listed Poland as 3rd country with the best programmers. Not to mention there's many jobs being outsourced to Poland as well as plenty of gaming studios such as Techland or CD Projekt Red.

Ukraine/Belarus mogs Russia not even joking. Wouldn't surprise me if a lot of the 'russians' in compsci are ukrainian/belarusian immigrants.

The study you linked uses an ETS Major Field Test which the paper itself acknowledges favor U.S. students due to its alignment with Western teaching styles

They aren't measuring coding ability but general CS knowledge and schools outside US dont teach CS concepts in that way. CS schools outside of US dont have deep learning about how things work with project based assignments.

One example I can think of is OOPs. In Indian unis it is often taught as Java syntax rather than software architecture and Compiler Design involves drawing DFA diagrams than building a parser. So it is expected for Indian and Chinese students to do bad when they were never taught these things.

🇫🇮 Finland: This has to be on the list because of Linus Torvalds but even without him the tech scene in Finland is insane.Nokia's engineering legacy and a thriving startup scene (Supercell, Rovio) There are some insane geniuses coming out of there. Many top tier hackers have been Finnish

🇨🇳China: A global tech powerhouse not just in manufacturing but also in Al, computer vision, and cybersecurity. Extremely competitive CS courses that at this point suprass the west. Chinese students dominates international programming competitions like ICPC and IOI. Chinese and Indians more or less make the backbone of the silicon valley, Microsoft, Google and AWS.

🇮🇳India: Many people shit on India because many coders from India graduating out of no name colleges are bad due to the IT boom, everyone wanted to be a ITcel which cheapened the quality but the ones that graduate from the named schools are some of best I've seen. It also has massive IT ecosystem, engineering output. IITs, IIITs, and NITs have world class CS programs. India consistently ranks in the top 5 in competitive programming competitions and open-source contributions. Also a dominant force in coding Olympiads and hackathons and ofc the silicon valley scene.

🇷🇺Russia: World renowned for algorithmic and mathematical excellence. Some of the best most intelligent coders I've ever met were Russian. Also have a strong presence in ICPC, IOI, and other global coding Olympiads. Also don't have to mention how russian hackers infiltrate into American systems and make a joke out of the US cybersecurity infrastructure

🇯🇵Japan: May not have as many accolades as the ones I mentioned earlier but deserves to be here. Japanese schools also produce some top tier software engineers. They have deeply technical culture with a love for automation, robotics, and systems programming. Also home to legendary engineers behind Sony, Nintendo, and Toshiba innovations.Japnese coders are also there in Silicon Valley and are known for their discipline, precision, and strong low level programming

Special mention

🇩🇪Germany- German schools from what I've seen have a great balance between theoretical computer science and engineering. They teach CS like how it was intended to be taught like an engineering degree and not just speed run through coding parts. Their course material has a strong focus on embedded systems, industrial automation, and Al ethics. Some very good coders come out of Germany also
How good is America?

I heard Singapore also offers strong job prospects and high quality education in CS

Yeah that makes sense I already assumed it was this

It’s the difference between practical and technical/theory knowledge

I myself suck at practical but have all the theory on top

Makes sense and explains why Nigerians are great coders and hackers and scammers despite having 0 knowledge of shit same with pakis and Indians on avg.

So yeah I am not shocked at all
