The dual-stream format (spatial position and auditory letter simultaneously) adds a divided-attention demand on top of the updating demand, recruiting both the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (executive control, updating) and posterior parietal cortex (spatial/attentional buffer) more intensively than single-stream tasks. As you get used to a particular combinatorial setting, you can increase the difficulty and on some websites even add additional stimuli like photos, 3 dimensions, etc.


Evidence for memory increase:


Melby-Lervåg & Hulme's meta-analysis found solid transfer to verbal working memory (d ≈ 0.79) and spatial working memory (d ≈ 0.52) tasks — the strongest, most consistent finding in the whole n-back literature, well above the shaky far-transfer-to-IQ numbers.


A 2017 multi-level meta-analysis (33 RCTs, 203 effect sizes) found a medium-sized transfer effect to untrained n-back tasks specifically, with smaller effects for other working memory measures — gains are strongest on tasks structurally similar to n-back itself and taper off the further you get from that structure.


Several individual RCTs report improved performance on digit span and reading span, standard validated working-memory measures, following dual n-back training, consistent with the meta-analytic pattern above.


A 2021 study comparing dual n-back against the method of loci found dual n-back produced superior transfer effects on working memory measures like digit span and change detection, suggesting the updating-specific training does something a general mnemonic technique doesn't.



Overall, the N-back method protocol isn't for the consolidation of the methods by which your mind processes information and uses systems to make critical analyses of it (the theoretical foundation for RFT), so the point isn't IQ increase, something for which N-back doesn't have much evidence. However, it clearly has strong evidence for the improvement of one's short-term memory which is incredibly helpful in a wide variety of cognitive tasks and would not hurt to have in one's arsenal.

Note: If it matters at all, despite there not being conclusive scientific evidence for N-back resulting in IQ increase, many people have reported standard deviations worth of increase on their IQ tests before and after the administration of N-back training, so make of that what you wish.





Relational Frame Training (RFT)


RFT's core claim is that derived relational responding — the ability to infer relationships you were never directly taught, such as if A=B and B=C then A=C, or if A is opposite to B and B is opposite to C then A=C — is the basic operant unit underlying verbal, analytical intelligence itself, not just a correlate of it. RFT drills this directly through multiple exemplar training: repeated practice deriving relations like same as, opposite of, more or less than, before or after, across many different stimulus sets, until the pattern of relational responding generalizes to entirely novel stimuli the person has never seen. This is mechanistically different from n-back: n-back trains a specific executive process and hopes it transfers, while RFT trains the actual operation that IQ test items like analogies, matrices, and syllogisms are built from. The theoretical distance between trained skill and tested skill is much shorter, which is the a priori reason to expect better transfer.


Foundational work by D. Barnes-Holmes and colleagues established that this kind of relational fluency is trainable and generalizable even in children who initially lacked it, meaning the underlying skill isn't fixed but is a learned repertoire.


Evidence for IQ increase:


Cassidy, Roche & Hayes's pilot study found children given stimulus equivalence training followed by relational frame training on SAME, OPPOSITE, MORE THAN, and LESS THAN showed significant full-scale WISC IQ gains after each stage, versus a no-treatment control.


Cassidy, Roche, Colbert & Grey, published in Learning and Individual Differences, found online SMART training produced average IQ increases of roughly 28 points, alongside gains in verbal, numerical, and educational aptitude, using the Wechsler scales as the outcome measure.


A correlational study using the Relational Abilities Index, a 55-item relational-puzzle assessment, found meaningful correlations between relational skill and full-scale IQ, the National Adult Reading Test, and other standard cognitive measures, supporting the theoretical link independent of the intervention effect.


This is the most promising means by which IQ and its underlying mechanistic foundations can be amplified and increased, and the one for which we have the most amount of evidence. However, the studies haven't been widely replicated and it's a very niche area of research, but nevertheless very promising. Also take into account that the younger you are the more effective this is going to be.





Image Streaming


Wenger's model holds that closing your eyes and continuously narrating spontaneous mental imagery out loud forces simultaneous engagement of the visual/imagery system and the verbal articulation system, which he argues strengthens the neural connections between them, improving both visualization vividness and the speed and fluency of translating internal representations into language.

Several individual RCTs report improved performance on digit span and reading span, standard validated working-memory measures, following dual n-back training, consistent with the meta-analytic pattern above.


A 2021 study comparing dual n-back against the method of loci found dual n-back produced superior transfer effects on working memory measures like digit span and change detection, suggesting the updating-specific training does something a general mnemonic technique doesn't.



Overall, the N-back method protocol isn't for the consolidation of the methods by which your mind processes information and uses systems to make critical analyses of it (the theoretical foundation for RFT), so the point isn't IQ increase, something for which N-back doesn't have much evidence. However, it clearly has strong evidence for the improvement of one's short-term memory which is incredibly helpful in a wide variety of cognitive tasks and would not hurt to have in one's arsenal.

Note: If it matters at all, despite there not being conclusive scientific evidence for N-back resulting in IQ increase, many people have reported standard deviations worth of increase on their IQ tests before and after the administration of N-back training, so make of that what you wish.





Relational Frame Training (RFT)


RFT's core claim is that derived relational responding — the ability to infer relationships you were never directly taught, such as if A=B and B=C then A=C, or if A is opposite to B and B is opposite to C then A=C — is the basic operant unit underlying verbal, analytical intelligence itself, not just a correlate of it. RFT drills this directly through multiple exemplar training: repeated practice deriving relations like same as, opposite of, more or less than, before or after, across many different stimulus sets, until the pattern of relational responding generalizes to entirely novel stimuli the person has never seen. This is mechanistically different from n-back: n-back trains a specific executive process and hopes it transfers, while RFT trains the actual operation that IQ test items like analogies, matrices, and syllogisms are built from. The theoretical distance between trained skill and tested skill is much shorter, which is the a priori reason to expect better transfer.


Foundational work by D. Barnes-Holmes and colleagues established that this kind of relational fluency is trainable and generalizable even in children who initially lacked it, meaning the underlying skill isn't fixed but is a learned repertoire.


Evidence for IQ increase:


Cassidy, Roche & Hayes's pilot study found children given stimulus equivalence training followed by relational frame training on SAME, OPPOSITE, MORE THAN, and LESS THAN showed significant full-scale WISC IQ gains after each stage, versus a no-treatment control.


Cassidy, Roche, Colbert & Grey, published in Learning and Individual Differences, found online SMART training produced average IQ increases of roughly 28 points, alongside gains in verbal, numerical, and educational aptitude, using the Wechsler scales as the outcome measure.


A correlational study using the Relational Abilities Index, a 55-item relational-puzzle assessment, found meaningful correlations between relational skill and full-scale IQ, the National Adult Reading Test, and other standard cognitive measures, supporting the theoretical link independent of the intervention effect.


This is the most promising means by which IQ and its underlying mechanistic foundations can be amplified and increased, and the one for which we have the most amount of evidence. However, the studies haven't been widely replicated and it's a very niche area of research, but nevertheless very promising. Also take into account that the younger you are the more effective this is going to be.





Image Streaming


Wenger's model holds that closing your eyes and continuously narrating spontaneous mental imagery out loud forces simultaneous engagement of the visual/imagery system and the verbal articulation system, which he argues strengthens the neural connections between them, improving both visualization vividness and the speed and fluency of translating internal representations into language.
The idea is that continuous real-time narration under time pressure, describing the image as it's happening rather than after, trains rapid lexical retrieval and sentence construction, similar to how simultaneous interpretation trains fluency in interpreters.


Evidence for IQ increase:


Wenger's own claim, repeated across his self-published materials, is that roughly 25 hours of practice produces meaningful gains in IQ points.


I was unable to find any independent, peer-reviewed, controlled study measuring image streaming's effect on IQ, verbal fluency, or visualization ability. All available claims trace back to some niche, un-replicated studies with questionable protocols of research conduct and anecdotal or testimonial reports. Nevertheless I wanted to included because I've seen personal success with it in treating aphantasia (the inability to see in your mind's eye) and so have an entire dedicated community of people.

yeah but you could be doing cognitively demanding tasks like studying calculus but that wouldn't raise ur IQ even if you were taking pharma. It's about which cognitively demanding tasks are being done and those would be the ones that functionally target the mechanisms required to increase IQ.
