The extreme fragility of the human body is utterly terrifying.
It’s hard to describe, but I think you know what I mean. The fact that we could die or be crippled for the rest of our lives in a moment’s notice is scary.
My partner’s aunt, for example, was a fit person who traveled, hiked, climbed, and even survived cancer (I think). She tripped, fell, hit her head, and died. Just like that.
This is also a kind of primordial fear when looking at gore. Seeing someone die because of a small hit to the neck, for instance.
Bam, life over. I saw another case where someone was stabbed in the neck. You couldn’t even see the wound on video, and three seconds later he was vomiting half a liter of blood.
Imagine being that guy. You suddenly feel a cold sting in your neck, and before you can even process it, you’re bleeding profusely. You realize you won’t have the time to ask for forgiveness, and in that moment, you understand that your life ends today and that there will be no return.
This is true even for less dramatic things. It’s scary how easily humans can be killed, crippled, or disfigured.
I don’t want to be crippled or disfigured, and for the time being, I don’t want to die in the foreseeable future.
