Is scarcity. People simply want more than society can provide. If this cannot be fixed our societies will collapse. The only way to solve this problem is by increasing the available energy and intelligence. Without powerful AI and better energy (fusion, space solar beaming, thorium etc...) society will collapse into a real dystopia as people's demands outpace the supply and inevitable conflict results.

If everything goes right life will be very easy. Imagine 10 usd meals, 100 usd international flights, free healthcare with advanced preventative measures, free university, 200 usd rent for a comfortable single apartment, and even free AI matchmaking services that find you a marriage partner with 90% satisfaction and lifetime commitment rates. Instead of working a drudge wage-slave job, you will likely work an interesting job that involves you mastering a wide range of skills as automation will take care of all of the details.

If everything goes wrong we will go back to the quality of life of 1940 except even more depressing and dystopian.

This isnt the case, boomers lived the life youre describing. Its perfectly possible, the problem is that its designed to be this way. Theres abundance in everything, in the western world at least, but this isnt beneficial to those at top who already live in abundance so they then set out to gatekeep all paths to getting there. It's why the middle class is being utterly eradicated because once the rich minority control the vast majority of the wealth, the easiest way to maintain that level is not to constantly keep improvising and improving over the infinite amount of people trying to reach you but to instead just create endless barriers so nobody else possibly can reach you

There is no longer a need for a large or even medium middle class but there is always going to be a need for masses of min wage workers as each major industry infinitely expands and buys out everyone else. And not only that but the more businesses expand then the more and more low skill wagies become necessary to keep it afloat eg : for each new amazon factory/MacDonalds thats built, they all need to be housed with high numbers of extremely expendable and interchangeable workers that can be fired and replaced at a moments notice. Masses of minimum wagies have become far more important for countries to cultivate than a mass of middle class workers that are all demanding better pay and hours while the minimum wagers know they cant demand anything. When you don't cultivate masses minimum wagies then all your industries start dying, like what's happening in japan, and the only way to keep your business afloat is for every worker to have to work inhumanly long hours in order to compensate for lack of workers like they do over there

This is why the western world is so dead set on mass immigration even though none of these countries have prepared for it in any way. Theyre not establishing educational or housing programs for these immigrants because it's far more beneficial to just have masses of low skilled labourers that can still be taxed out the ass while also being an entirely expendable worker pool
