What are the auricular muscles?

The auricular muscles are the facial muscle around the ear protecting the ear canal, controlling the ear position, and stabalizing the ear.
None of this matters to us except the ability to control it. Strengthening these muscles (mainly the superior and posterior auricular muscles) will allow voluntary movement of them.

Why is this important?

Besides the obvious upside of strengthening your facial muscles which tightens the skin around it, increases the skin's firmness, and decreasing the noticeabilty or amount of wrinkles, learning how to hold these muscles in place can give you a very subtle "face lift." This wont ascend you but it definitley makes a difference. (only if you are lean in the first place) When you flex the posterior and superior auricular muscles it pulls the ear back and up and your skin along with it. This tightens your face and inceases the visiblity of the zygomatic arch, influencing hollow cheeks, and could slightly effect your eye area by pulling the eyelids back and tightening the skin around your zygos.

How do you learn how to do this?

Learning to voluntarily move these muscles is actually quite simple. When you smile or raise an eyebrow they are activated. Doing these things long enough will eventually allow you to slightly move your ear. Keep moving it/holding it and your mind muscle connection with those muscles will become stronger. You will be able to move it more by a few mm. The stronger these muscles get the longer you can hold them and the more noticeable it will become. It might feel like you're smiling at first but if you look in the mirror and do it (which helps) you will notice you are keeping a straight face, which goes back to the fact they are activated when smiling.
