What is marriage?

Historically marriage wasn’t just romantic. It was a legal and social covenant designed to enforce fidelity and provide generational stability for children a safe environment to grow up in with both parents present. Contrary to what most niggas here think, marriages are actual ancient. They goes back to the very beginning of civilization itself. One of the oldest social contracts that exists, found in all cultures around the world. Today it has turned into a circus.

For virtually all of human history, across almost every major culture (Mesopotamian, Roman, Feudal European, Asian, Ancient India, Tribal African), marrying for love was considered reckless, immature, and irresponsible. Marriage was a business merger between two families. Parents or village elders arranged unions based on land, social status, and work ethic. If love grew between the couple over time, that was a nice bonus not a prerequisite.

The Shift to "Romantic Love" (18th–20th Century)

1000223941

All this began to change with the Industrial Revolution young people started earning independent wages in cities and women started entering the work force rather than relying on family land. For the first time people could choose their own partners based on affection rather than family duty. This gave rise to the all in one partner. Someone who is rich, good looking, kind, benevolent And all these changes along with various feminist movements and globalism resulted in the proverbial final nail to the institution of marriage

1000223944

California became the first state to adopt no-fault divorce in 1969, eliminating the legal requirement to prove adultery, cruelty, or abandonment in order to dissolve a marriage. By 1985, every state in the country had followed. The legal infrastructure that had enforced marital fidelity through financial and custodial consequence for the entirety of American history was dismantled in 16 years.

Approximately 16 percent of married women and 20 percent of married men now report at least one extramarital partner according to the Institute for Family Studies in Charlottesville, Virginia

Ashley Madison, a platform designed for married individuals seeking affairs, launched in 2001 in Toronto under the tagline "Life is short. Have an affair."

1000223945

The site surpassed 80 million registered accounts by 2024. In 2015, hackers released the data of 32 million users. The company survived, rebranded, and continued growing.

1000223946

The global infidelity market now generates over $3 billion annually across platforms including Ashley Madison, Gleeden of Paris, and Victoria Milan of Oslo.

The U.S. marriage rate fell from 10.6 per 1,000 in 1970 to 6.0 per 1,000 in 2021 according to the CDC, the lowest ever recorded.

1000223948

The median divorce costs over $15,000 according to Martindale-Nolo Research. The institution that once formed the foundation of every civilization on earth now has worse retention numbers than Spotify and Netflix

Why not just stay single?

Because opting out comes with severe real-world costs. Decades of Harvard and NIH longitudinal studies show unmarried men face a harsh “bachelor penalty”

Another Proposed War Tax

  • Married men live 7 to 17 years longer.
  • Unmarried men have a 38% higher risk of dying from heart disease and 2x higher risk of suicide/accidents.
  • Married men earn a 10% to 40% wage premium over single peers due to behavioral stabilization and household specialization.
And several more social and irl disadvantage, the list is long and the stats are clear that after a certain age unless you are some ultra high status celebrity it is in your best interest to become committed to someone.

This leaves men trapped between two options:
  1. Marry — Accept a legally volatile contract with high financial downside.
  2. Stay Single — Avoid legal risk, but face higher rates of early mortality, loneliness, mental illness and lower lifetime earnings
Since the state no longer legally enforces marital commitment, stability relies entirely on ruthless partner selection. According to data highlights two critical filters are:
  • The Age Sweet Spot: IFS Data shows marrying between ages 25 and 32 results in the lowest divorce rates ideally low body counts for both the genders. Yes both
  • Emotional Stability: Gottman Research demonstrates that screening for low contempt and high emotional regulation predicts long-term marital survival with over 90% accuracy.
Now I know what some dumb blackpill doomer would say just be a chad bro and all will fine. Unfortunately that is not how it works. My earlier threads should make it abundantly clear but according to stats and psychological data shows that absolute beauty matters less for stability than attractiveness parity. In simpler words just date and marry your looksmatch
  • Couples who are “matched” in physical attractiveness (both rated similarly on objective scales) and the same ethnicity/background have significantly lower divorce rates.
  • Severe physical asymmetry in both genders often correlates with high relationship insecurity, mate guarding behavior and unequal power dynamics which causes cracks in the marriage over time

What to actually look for in a woman (the non-negotiables)

If you are going to risk it, start screening like you are hiring a lifelong business partner who will also raise your children. Here’s the practical list
  1. Low body count + clean sexual history- High partner count is one of the strongest predictors of future divorce and lower marital satisfaction.
  2. Emotional regulation and low contempt- Watch how she handles stress, disagreement, and boredom. Does she escalate every conflict into personal attacks? Does she roll her eyes, stonewall, or go nuclear? Gottman research is clear. Contempt is the single biggest predictor of divorce. If she cannot regulate her emotions as a girlfriend, marriage will not fix it.
  3. Relationship with her own family- How she treats her parents and siblings is a preview of how she will treat you when the honeymoon phase dies. Chronic chaos, cut-off parents with no good reason, or constant drama with family is a red flag. Stable women come from stable homes.
  4. Practical competence and work ethic-Can she cook basic meals, manage money, keep a space clean, and handle real responsibilities without collapsing?
  5. Shared core values and long-term orientation- Kids, religion (or lack of it) money, lifestyle, and views on fidelity need to line up. You do not need identical opinions on everything, but fundamental worldview mismatches will surface later as resentment.
  6. Low social media addiction and external validation seeking- A woman whose self-worth is heavily tied to likes, male attention, and public image is a statistically higher risk for eventual dissatisfaction and wandering.
  7. Capacity for loyalty and delayed gratification- Does she show up consistently when things are boring or hard, or does she only exist when the dopamine is high? Loyalty is proven in the low moments
Everything else (humor, shared hobbies, chemistry) is secondary. Those are nice to haves. The list above is the difference between a marriage that lasts and one that becomes a litigation.

1000223588

TLDR:

Marriage isn't obsolete but also not the same the state is no longer there to protect the institution of marriage In the modern era a successful marriage requires extreme partner selection, vetting, and character assessment. Marry between 25–32, marry your looksmatch from a similar background, prioritize low body count, emotional stability, family history, practical competence, and real loyalty. Treat the decision exactly like you are choosing a lifelong business partner because that is what it is.

Great thread. In my opinion, I don't think highly of marriages. If you love someone, I don't think you need some piece of paper, ceremony or whatever to confirm it.

Treat the decision exactly like you are choosing a lifelong business partner because that is what it is.

I guess I did everything right.

Sweet Spot: I wa 31 and she was 28.

Low body count: Her zero. Me lots (but I'm a man and none of them besides one did I ever think of as anything serious for any length of time)

Emotional regulation/contempt: I've never seen my wife roll her eyes at anything. Not at me or anything. She never loses control either.

Relationship with family: Respects them very much and keeps in frequent touch with them. Her father's disappointment is a big weight on her even if she knows he's wrong about something.

Practical competence: She cooks 3-6 meals every day, takes care of ALL the domestic chores, and ensures our son gets at least three hours of socialization at parks or libraries a day. She's also began teaching him to read English and Chinese every day. He knows the alphabet and can read many English words already. In Chinese she's using a lot of music and songs to teach him characters. For the past couple months she's also been making sure he consumes at least 30 minutes of Khmer media every morning as well as 30 minutes every evening.

Shared core values: Always been the same as my own.

Social media/external validation: She's never had social media if any kind besides Wechat which she's only ever used to keep in touch with family and her girl friends she grew up with or dormed with in college. And if her self worth was tied to public image even slightly she simply could not be married to me. I'm the blackest of black sheep.

Capacity for loyalty: She's not the type of person who can be happy if she feels like she's wronged a person.

While I'm a very bad guy compared to her, or even compared to many regular people, nothing is hidden from her. I'm very stable as well. Especially in high stress or intense situations. I've beaten people in front of her and lashed out at strangers at supermarkets but those incidents were calculated. The two people I beat up weren't the type to pull a gun or anything. If they were I would have de escalated if possible or prepaired to kill them because I wasn't in a position to flee. I certainly would not have escalated anything any further with my physical presence or my mouth. My relationship with drugs are more of a hedonistic curiosity than anything. They're not a product of emotional turmoil.

Lastly, I've beaten her. Sometimes it was the right thing to do and sometimes it wasn't. Like I said I haven't had a lot of relationship experience. I've never hit a previous girlfriend because I've never had a girlfriend before her whom I wasn't 100% certainly I would never marry, despite what the poor things themselves thought. All of them I've either broken up with on the spot or the day after following something I woukd have been right to hit them for. I've come a long way as far as not beating my wife for things that don't merit it. And she's come a long way as far as not doing the things that do.

I provide love, financial resources, and direction. She provides love, children/rearing, and a well kept living space. That being said she would still never leave me if I failed to hold up my end.

high iq post but realistically number 1 in looking for a partner is nearly impossible in today’s world, you can get told a number or a lie, but you’ll never know the real truth to a women’s body count

So everything has evolved for the better, and in the modern era both women and men can choose partners based on love, respect, and compatibility, instead of waking up with one random ugly dumb individual who they are conditioned to live in the same house with until death, just because their families decided so, which naturally led to a decrease in marriages

Because of this, both partners need to be more careful and skeptical about which partners they choose if they want to have a functional long-term relationship, what is obviously natural

Amazing, what can I say more..
