Smoking could also prove just how deep your friendship was with another dude. One of my best friends would always share his last cigarette with me, something he would never do with someone else. Then you’d hear “This is my last cigarette.” But if I asked for one, he would give it to me nonetheless.

Back then, you had to be 16 years of age to buy cigarettes, but somehow he managed to buy a pack of smokes from a local gas station despite the clerk knowing he wasn’t of age. On the computer instant messaging app, he would message me “Bring €2, I’ll bring the rest so we can buy some smokes.” And then right before heading to school together, we’d meet up somewhere, I’d hand him the money and he would buy the smokes. They were €4,40 back then, nowadays they are €11+.

So, quitting smoking isn’t just good for your health, it’s also good for your wallet.

I was cigarette-free from 18 until 25. Then I became extremely depressed and I started smoking cigarettes again. My excuse was: I could take deep sighs without letting anyone know something was bothering me. After all, exhaling cigarette smoke is absolutely normal.
