I learned this the other day and found it very interesting. "Kikel" is the yiddish word for circle. And they're called that because Jewish immigrants arriving at Ellis Island in the early 20th century were asked to sign immigration forms. Many who could not write in English refused to sign with an "X," as they associated that mark with the Christian cross. Instead, they drew a circle.
