The Ultimate Guide to Sclera Whitening

What exactly is the sclera might you ask?

The Sclera of the eye is the outermost layer of the eye, usually white in color and is a soft tissue that surrounds the eye and protects the inner layers of the eye from foreign objects that we encounter in our environment. It also serves to maintain the overall shape of the eye.

What makes white scleras attractive in humans and why is it important for them to be white?

It's simple. White scleras are a sign of good health, a good lifestyle and good genetic prowess amongst other things of course. Discolored scleras are not only aesthetically unpleasing but are a sign of poor health, a bad diet, and people will always think you are high on drugs, tired, or sick. And these factors are a big No no when it comes to first impressions. Whether it be dating, a job interview, or a family reunion.

If you ask someone which set of eyes looks the most attractive, 99% will say the ones with the white scleras. Despite all other factors of the eye area being the same, the set with the WHITE scleras look the most attractive. And this is an underrated factor of looksmaxxing that is rarely talked about here compared to things like eye color or lashes.

The Evolutionary Biology Behind White Scleras

White scleras are actually unique to humans. Most primates have dark scleras which conceal the direction of their gaze. Humans evolved white scleras as a form of social signaling, allowing us to easily see where others are looking. This facilitated cooperative behavior and non-verbal communication.

But here's where it gets interesting. The "health" aspect is real. When your sclera is pure white, it signals to others that your body is functioning optimally. It shows that your immune system is healthy and not fighting off infection. When they're red, yellow, or dull, it signals the opposite. It indicates that something is wrong and triggers an automatic negative reaction from others. This is why people who appear "tired" or "sick" are less likely to be hired, less likely to be approached, and less likely to be perceived as attractive.

What causes the Scleras to be discolored in the first place?

There are many things that can cause the whites of the eye to discolor but for the sake of this thread, I'm just gonna go over the main ones.

1. Lack of sleep:

Lack of sleep decreases oxygen that is available for the eyes; this causes blood vessels to dilate and give the appearance of being red or bloodshot. This is the most common cause among forum users because most of you are staying up late coping on here instead of getting your 8 hours. When you sleep, your eyes undergo a reparative process where oxidative damage is cleared and blood vessels return to normal caliber. Chronic sleep deprivation prevents this from happening.

2. Smoking or drug use:

It's pretty much commonly known that smoking substances like marijuana or vaping can dilute the blood vessels in the eye or make them super dry and this can also cause the eye to develop a red tint. Nicotine also constricts blood vessels and reduces oxygen delivery to the eyes over time, leading to a dull, unhealthy appearance. The carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke also reduces the oxygen-carrying capacity of your blood, directly starving the eye tissues.

3. Jaundice:

I imagine this doesn't affect many of the users here as this is a liver condition that causes the liver to not being to process red blood cells correctly and thus leads to a buildup of bilirubin that causes the eyes as well as the skin to develop a yellow tint to it. If your eyes look like this, it may be a sign of liver failure and you should see a doctor immediately. This is a medical emergency.

4. Melanin deposits:

This likely doesn't affect many of the white or very light skin posters here. This is more commonly found in those with Fitzpatrick 6 skin and less commonly Fitzpatrick 5. But essentially when the body produces too much melanin which can be caused by many things including excess UV exposure, genetics, or some type of injury, you'll start to see it in places you don't want it, and one of those places is the Sclera of the eye. This is caused by melanocytes migrating into the conjunctiva. This is benign in most cases but is considered aesthetically unappealing.

5. Allergies and environmental irritants:

Chronic allergies cause histamine release which dilates blood vessels in the eyes and leads to redness and irritation. Over time, this can cause permanent damage to the conjunctiva and make your scleras look permanently irritated and dull. If you have seasonal allergies, get that under control.

6. Digital eye strain:

Staring at screens all day reduces blink rate and causes dry, irritated eyes. The blood vessels dilate to compensate for the lack of moisture and oxygen, giving you that red, tired look. Blue light exposure also generates oxidative stress in the eye tissues. This is why so many modern Zoomers have garbage tier scleras despite being young.

7. Poor diet and dehydration:

A diet high in processed foods and low in antioxidants leads to systemic inflammation which shows up in the eyes. Dehydration makes the eyes look sunken and dull with less contrast against the iris. Hydration and proper nutrition are free softmaxxes that too many of you ignore. Inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and oxidative stress directly correlate with scleral discoloration.

8. High blood pressure and cardiovascular issues:

Hypertension causes the blood vessels in the eye to become tortuous and prone to rupture. This leads to chronic redness and visible broken capillaries. If you have high blood pressure, your scleras are going to look like a road map of broken vessels. This is another signal that your internal health is suffering.

9. Environmental pollution and UV exposure:

UV radiation generates free radicals in the eye tissues, leading to oxidative damage and pterygium formation. This not only discolors the sclera but also causes growths to form on the eye. Wear UV blocking sunglasses and limit direct sun exposure to your eyes.

Now that we've discussed some things that can cause the eyes to become discolored, now let's talk about some solutions. One of which I've been doing my research on for a while and I've been experimenting with myself and I've gotten promising results from :).

1. Improve your lifestyle:

This one is obvious, but before you spend money on any potential remedies, you should do what's free and easy. And that is to get more sleep, ideally 7-9 hours per night, depending on your age. Sleep is when your eyes repair themselves and clear out oxidative damage. Eating healthier will also help, avoid eating fatty foods or food that is heavily processed as these types of foods often contain artificial flavoring, preservatives, etc that when in the body, can't be properly digested and thus linger around and cause systemic inflammation. And STOP doing drugs. Not only is it a looksmin in many other aspects of how you look, but it will make your eyes look like shit and you'll look low class. Doing these things will drastically improve the look of your eyes.

2. Hydration and diet:

Drink at least 2-3 liters of water per day. Your eyes are mostly water and dehydration directly impacts their appearance. Increase your intake of antioxidant rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and carrots. Vitamin A is particularly important for eye health. Zinc, lutein, and zeaxanthin are also critical for maintaining healthy eye tissues. You can supplement these if you're not getting enough from food.

3. Eye drops for redness:

This should be a no brainer as eye drops are typically used to fix the majority of issues regarding the eyes. These drops will have the best effect on whitening scleras.

Lumify eye drops:

These drops are solely designed for those with red colored scleras. If lifestyle improvements don't reduce the redness in your eyes, these should do the trick. The active ingredient is brimonidine tartrate which constricts the blood vessels in the eye and provides rapid whitening. It works by selectively binding to alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, causing vasoconstriction without the rebound redness associated with other drops like Visine. Although I'm warning, do not get too reliant on these drops as chronic use isn't good for the eyes. Only use if you're going out on a date, or about to take some photos or something like that. They work within minutes and last for 6-8 hours.

4. Artificial tears for dryness:

If your eyes are red due to dryness rather than inflammation, regular artificial tears can help. Look for preservative free options if you're using them frequently. Dry eyes appear dull and lifeless, so keeping them lubricated improves the overall brightness. Hyaluronic acid based drops provide the best lubrication.

5. Supplementation:

Glutathione (Liposomal high dosage or injections) + Vitamin C is really the only stack that can lighten eyes as Glutathione inhibits tyrosinase and clears free radicals from the body. Vitamin C will aid in the overall lightening effects and recycle glutathione in the body. This stack will help whiten your scleras over time by reducing melanin deposition and oxidative damage.

NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is a precursor to glutathione and can be taken orally to boost endogenous glutathione production. This is a cheaper alternative to liposomal glutathione but less bioavailable.

NOW THESE LAST DROPS ARE THE HOLY GRAIL. Amongst other softmaxxes, these have made my eyes pretty white. They are expensive as hell. But if you have slight brown or grey tinted eyes that look dull, these drops will bring life back into your eyes. With the main side effect being that they make the eyes watery for a while.

These drops cost about $45 in the US, maybe more if you're overseas and have to import. But they are 100% worth the cost and will ASCEND your scleras.

6. Reduce screen time and blue light exposure:

Use blue light filters on your devices, take regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), and consider blue light blocking glasses if you work on screens all day. This reduces oxidative stress on the eyes and prevents chronic redness.

7. Warm compresses for blocked glands:

If your eyes are consistently red and irritated, you may have blocked meibomian glands which reduce oil production and cause dry eye. A warm compress for 5-10 minutes daily can unblock these glands and improve eye lubrication and appearance.

8. Cold compresses for puffiness:

Cold compresses constrict blood vessels and reduce puffiness around the eyes. This also temporarily whitens the sclera. Use a cold spoon or chilled eye mask in the morning for a quick fix before important events.

9. Limit alcohol and caffeine:

Both alcohol and caffeine dehydrate the body and constrict blood vessels, leading to dull, tired looking eyes. If you're going to drink, hydrate heavily before and after. Caffeine in moderation is fine but don't overdo it.

10. Allergen management:

If you have seasonal allergies, take antihistamines and use preservative free allergy eye drops as needed. Keeping allergens under control prevents chronic redness and irritation.

11. Nasal breathing and sleep position:

Nasal breathing during sleep prevents dry eyes and reduces the risk of eye infections. Mouth breathing dries out the eyes and leads to redness. Sleep on your back to prevent fluid retention around the eyes which can cause puffiness and scleral dullness. This is connected to the lymphatic drainage of the face.

12. Collagen support and anti-aging:

Supporting your body's collagen production with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid helps maintain the structural integrity of the sclera and conjunctiva. This prevents thinning and yellowing associated with aging. Topical eye creams with caffeine and vitamin K can also help reduce dark circles and improve sclera appearance by reducing blood pooling.
