I disagree. My parents raised me not in my own best interest, but in their best interest. And I think many parents are like that.

If your parents don't care about the way they look, they will seek to be validated in this belief by trying to make you also not care about the way you look. This way they have someone close to them that they can relate to and is walking in the same footsteps as they did.

It's the same why educated people often push their kids towards education aswell. Why a sportsplayer or race-driver will push their kid into that same sports/hobby/field/carreer.
