The importance of hair
People undermine how important hair is, “why should I care?” “If I'm Chad, hair doesn't even matter”. Hair helps your image, portraying how others see you. Look at Lorenzo Zurzolo and Taylor Hill for example.

1781479590320
1781479590222

You can clearly see how the long hair benefits Zurzolo, increasing his SMV. Check Tiktok edits / posts about him. You will always see him with long hair. Let's be honest, he looks much better with the longer hair.

1781481177565
1781481184579

It's the same with Taylor; she has had much more hate due to her haircut. With many calling her “chopped”, telling her she “fell off”. Her new style altered how people view her making her appear more masculine, reducing her SMV.

Now do you understand the importance of hair and how it can change someone's entire perception of you? Perfect, lets get to you you can actually ascend through your hair.

Each hair type & how to identify yours
Everyone's hair is different, knowing your hair type & texture is important as it's crucial for creating an effective hair care routine, selecting the right products, choosing a haircut and preventing damage.

Puberty and its effect on hair
During puberty, the hair on your head can change in texture, thickness, curl pattern, and color due to hormonal shifts, mainly testosterone. Many boys notice that fine childhood hair becomes thicker, coarser, or more voluminous, and some may develop waves or curls even if their hair was straight before. These changes happen because hormones can slightly alter the shape of hair follicles, which affects how the hair grows.

Hair color can also darken or deepen during adolescence, as increased melanin production changes previously lighter childhood hair to darker shades. At the same time, oil production on the scalp increases, which can make hair appear greasier and may require more frequent washing. These changes are gradual, often continuing through the late teens, and hair care routines may need to adapt to maintain healthy, manageable hair as texture and oiliness evolve.

Hair routines for each type
1781480146783

Type 1: straight hair (1A - 1C)

1781480146890

Straight hair is the oliest of hair types, as oil is produced from your scalp and travels down below to the bottom of the strand. As it has no waves (thus gliding down the hairstrand easily).
Making straight hair gets oily the fastest. Because of this shampoo 2-3 times a week. Then hydrate with a conditioner. Once you wash your hair, spray sea salt all over damp hair, scrunch lightly to enhance texture. Lastly, use Texture Clay. I would recommend looking on the kerestase website about clay and how it works. If your hair gets oily in between wash days use dry shampoo. (link: How to Use Hair Clay - Step by Step | Kérastase Australia)

Products to use
Personally, I would recommend Kerastase's male collection. Women love their products for a reason they are just that good. I use their shampoo, conditioner on my hair and they work great for me. (My sister bought it for me as a christmas gift)

  1. Shampoo
  • Spécifique Balancing Shampoo for Oily Scalp (Kerastase)
  1. Conditioner
  • Odele Thickening Conditioner
  1. Sea salt spray
  • Bondi Boost sea salt spray
  1. Texture Clay
  • Keven Murphy Night.Rider

Type 2: wavy hair (2A - 2C)

1781480146926

Wavy hair is a mix of straight and curly textures, which means oil from the scalp doesn’t travel down the strand as easily. Because of the bends in the hair, wavy hair can have oily roots but dry ends.Wavy hair usually gets oily at the scalp but still needs moisture through the lengths. Because of this, shampoo 2 times a week, focusing mainly on the scalp. Follow with a lightweight, hydrating conditioner on the mid-lengths to ends.Once you wash your hair, apply a curl cream to damp hair. Scrunch upward to define the waves. For extra texture and hold, finish with a light mousse or sea salt spray, then air-dry or diffuse on low heat. Just like straight hair, if your hair gets oily use dry shampoo.

If you do not know how to diffuse your hair here is a tutorial: How To Use a Diffuser On Your Hair

Products to use

This is the routine I personally use, (excluding the conditioner) along with a hair oil for my ends. My sister also bought me the davoure curl balm for christmas and it has made my waves so much more smooth, defined & less frizzy. Make sure to not put too much of the curl cream on at once or else your hair will have so much product build up.

  1. Shampoo
  • Spécifique Balancing Shampoo for Oily Scalp (Kerastase)
  1. Conditioner
  • Davoure Moisture Senses Hydrating Conditioner
  1. Curl cream
  • Davoure Curlicue Curl Balm
  1. Sea salt spray or Texture spray
  • Bondi Boost sea salt spray
  • Keven Murphy Night.Rider

Type 3: curly hair (3A - 3C)

1781481268152

Curly hair has tight bends and coils, which makes it harder for natural oils from the scalp to travel down the strand. Because of this, curly hair tends to be drier and needs more moisture to stay healthy and defined. Curly hair doesn’t get oily as quickly, so shampoo once a week using a gentle shampoo. Always follow with a rich, hydrating conditioner to replenish moisture. After washing, apply a leave-in conditioner or curl cream to soaking-wet hair. Scrunch upward to encourage curl formation. Then apply a holding gel to seal in moisture, reduce frizz, and provide long-lasting definition. Let hair air-dry or diffuse on low heat for best results.

Products to use

I would recommend any product from davoure, they have outstandingly positive reviews and my sister (i know i keep mentioning her ill get to that point) has very very long healthy BLEACHED hair and this is a brand she recommends to everyone.
  1. Shampoo
  • Davoure Moisture Senses Hydrating Shampoo
  1. Conditioner
  • Davoure Moisture Senses Hydrating Conditioner
  1. Leave in conditioner
  • Mark Anthony Strictly Curls Leave In Conditioner
  1. Curl cream
  • Davoure Curlicue Curl Balm
  1. Holding gel
  • Bounce Curl Light Hold Creme Gel

Type 4: kinky hair (4A - 4C)
Unfortunately, I honestly have struggled finding any information about kinky / coily hair. If you have type 4 hair i would recommend checking out kozact’s and Tino X Studio’s videos. Here is a link to get you started.

How to thicken hair / hair loss

Hair transplant

1781480245256
1781481574957

A hair transplant is cosmetic surgery that involves relocating healthy, thick hair follicles to thinning or bald spots. This surgery typically costs $4000 - $20,000 USD. In most cases, a hair transplant can still look great 10 years later and the transplanted hair is likely to remain in place.

Red light
Red light therapy is a non-invasive, low-level laser or LED treatment that uses specific red and near-infrared light wavelengths (600nm-900nm) to stimulate cell mitochondria, boosting ATP energy production for enhanced healing. It is often used for Anti-aging. Stanford Medicine stated that using red light for hair growth needs more research to be conducted, but “Studies have shown that red light penetrates the skin at shallow depths and stimulates follicle growth.”
Stanford Medicine: Red light therapy: What the science says
PMC: Hair Growth Promoting Effects of 650 nm Red Light Stimulation on Human Hair Follicles and Study of Its Mechanisms via RNA Sequencing Transcriptome Analysis - PMC

Rosemary oil

Rosemary oil stimulates scalp circulation, strengthens follicles, and may reduce dandruff. Research was conducted stating that Rosemary oil promotes hair growth comparable to 2% minoxidil in studies. Massage rosemary oil onto the scalp 2-3 times a week, focusing on thinning spots. (I recommend the Oil Garden Rosemary Scalp and Hair Oil)
NIH: Rosemary oil vs minoxidil 2% for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia: a randomized comparative trial - PubMed

Scalp massages

Scalp massages are a free and effective way to thicken your hair. Regular scalp massages for 5–10 minutes daily can promote hair growth by improving blood circulation, reducing tension, and stimulating hair follicles.
(Here is a massage video I would recommend following: How to Massage Your Scalp For Hair Growth | Living Aveda)

Minoxidil
Minoxidil is an FDA-approved, over-the-counter treatment (typically 2% or 5% topical solution/foam) that stimulates hair growth by increasing blood flow to follicles and extending the growth phase. It is considered one of the most effective ways to cure hairloss.Minoxidil requires twice-daily application and at least 3–6 months to show results. Continued use is mandatory, as stopping will cause hair loss to resume.

Derma Rolling

Derma rollers are a good option for hair growth. This is because they stimulate hair growth by creating microscopic injuries on the scalp, which boosts collagen and increases blood flow.
Here is a tutorial on how to derma roll: How to use the Derma Roller for Hair Loss

Ways to Lighten Hair (Natural & Unnatural)
Many people desire different hair colours, most often being lighter. People often prefer lighter hair due to its rarity and “sun-kissed” effect. Hairdressers use a level chart to indicate what kind of hair you have and how to select the correct product to achieve a target shade.

Bleach

Chemically breaks down melanin to remove hair color and dramatically lighten hair. It is the only unnatural treatment in the form, it is considered to be severely damaging if not looked after. Professional hair salon bleaching (full head or foils) is recommended, it often costs a range of $100+ with price varying depending on the length, thickness and reputation of the hair salon.
Sun + Lemon
UV rays gradually oxidize melanin, causing subtle, natural lightning over time. When layered with lemon the citric acid plus sunlight speeds up pigment oxidation for mild lightening, with overtime significant lightening if done consistently for months on end. This process is considered mildly damaging if done correctly.

Sun in / hair lightening sprays
UV rays gradually oxidize melanin, causing subtle, natural lightening over time; when layered with sun in, the UV exposure with consistent use over months the colours should lift significantly. (Just be aware of red / ginger tones if done on darker hair.) It is considered mildly damaging if done correctly just like the lemon + sun. Sun In typically costs $4-$9 USD. For people who aren't blonde, your hair will turn orange, (regardless if your hair has a cool undertone.) It's honestly better to just use bleach.

How to look after dyed hair
After bleaching & colouring your hair often gets dry, brittle and damaged if not looked after. These ways provided help improve your hair's health & maintenance tips once colouring your hair.

Colour Safe Shampoo
It says it in the name, it's safe & better for coloured hair.
(im not sure how to explain 💀)

Glosses & color balancing shampoos

Colour balancing shampoos help neutralise unwanted tones and keep your hair colour looking fresh between salon visits. They can work on both coloured and natural hair, especially brunettes, blondes, and greys. Glosses are semi-permanent colour treatments that add shine, refresh tone, and smooth the hair without permanently changing the colour. Used to revive faded colour or add a glossy finish. Here is an example of a colour balancing shampoo on a brunette:

Hair masks

Using a hair mask provides intense, deep conditioning to dry, damaged, or frizzy hair, restoring moisture and strengthening strands.

A hair mask I would recommend is the k-18 molecular repair treatment, it is clinically proven that K18PEPTIDE™ repairs damage from bleach, colour, chemical services, and heat, delivering immediate and lasting results for stronger, softer, smoother, and bouncier hair. (Taken via K18 Website) Another hair mask I would recommend is the Color wow Money mask. I've tried a tester and it made my hair so smooth, shiny & hydrated.

Minimise heat
This is the easiest & cheapest way to improve overall hair health, not just dyed.
This is because it prevents further damage & breakage. If you can't let, go of using heat then buy a heat protector.

Avoid Chlorine & Saltwater
This is a big thing, especially for blondes because chlorine and saltwater strip, oxidize, and fade colour, with many bleach blondes often turning green (I quite literally saw this happen at my swimming carnival) For all our surfers & swimmers that want coloured / bleached hair i recommend wearing a hair cap to cover your hair, preventing further damage (& turning green). If you’d rather let your hair out I would recommend Philip Kingsley Swimcap Water Resistant Mask or any other swimming / anti chlorine hair mask that shields hair from the drying and damaging effects of both chlorinated and salt water.
