im 16 (17 very soon) years old and have already had work done with my mouth with braces and currently permanent retainers.
pretty much all the people that responded to me in this forum and in another one have suggested a palate expander (Maxillary Skeletal Expander), and i've been looking into how to fix my recessed maxilla at my age on google, and the answer was the same.
so all roads lead to palate expander but i have no idea how to explain to my parents and the orthodontist that i would like that installed for a reason other than cosmetic, which they obviously wouldnt approve of (very much into the notion that im insecure and look just fine)
i dont think that this is a very standard question but i would appreciate help from anyone that tried more heavy approaches at a young age.
also normally i would just think about waiting until im 18 but the more i wait with this the less effect its going to have.

Never mention recession or cosmetics to your parents or an ortho because they will dismiss it as insecurity sadly instead frame it around airway and functional health by telling them you struggle with nasal breathing and bad sleep quality, and your palate is too narrow so your tongue does not fit on the roof of your mouth, then ask them to book a consult with an airway ortho for a CBCT scan to check your nasal airway volume since parents listen to sleep quality and medical scans instead of aesthetic complaints :feelsokman:

thing is i think its going to be very weird if i out of nowhere start complaining about difficulty breathing or sleeping since i never mentioned anything like that, and saying something like my tongue doesnt fully fit on the roof of my mouth will just make my dad say i worry too much.

they've also noticed i've been taking my looks more seriously recently and "focusing too much on my insecurities" so he'll just wave if off as another thing im complaining about that doesnt really matter.
