Better way to gain mass is to atrophy the trapezius muscles (traps), because they're not just on the collarbones, but actually stretch all the way up the back of the neck to about your ears. When you train, whether it's with barbell or machines, do rows with close grip, tighter than your shoulder length, and you'll hella feel your neck and traps workings.
I've never isolation trained but always alternate normal, wide, and close grip on all my exercises.

any tips for not making it tight mess where it starts affecting your neck?
