It simply doesn't work.

For any mechanotransduction to happen you'd have to signal "growth" to your maxilla first, after which your mandible would adapt to.

The force you think you apply on the sutures of your maxilla actively gets reduced by the mandible as you are biting down on the towel, resulting in no changes.

Thumbpulling is actually much more likely to be true, though some users claim it won't cause any permanent changes as soft tissues brings the bones back into position.
