Guys never train Obliques, traps, lats, or neck until you know what your doing in the gym and are able to apply certain training to your base (genetics). To much traps, lats , and neck will detract from your frame by making your shoulder proportions look worse. The same goes for having big obliques because it will make your waist look blocky. I fell for the beginner advice that told me to train obliques for a v-taper 
That was a big mistake and if your starting training I would actually suggest you don't train core at all.
